Wish I had an answer I am 6'1 and 1/16th and my partner is 5'6 and 7/8th so I am not your average climber. The advice I can give is quit climbing. I was going to quit till I saw this thread and realized Im not average height and this makes me better now Thanks.

you're never too tall or too short, just not strong enough.

Go ahead and whine about your height. However, Ramon Julian Puigblanque is ~5'2" and I doubt he complains about being too short.

He also put up many X routs that have not been repeated to date… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Herr

We not only get screwed on routes that we have to scruntch up on, but we also encounter problems on routes that are "reachy." When will we win? Average at everything, good at nothing. Damn. I am 5'8". When I encounter a hold that is a long reach, I generally use dynamic movement. This means I get in a good position where I can use a short burst of energy and get the momentum of my body/arm/hand to go towards the hold and grab it. This involves upper body strength as well as a descent grip strength.

nthusiastj wrote: First step: Stop convincing yourself that height is a limitation. Agreed. I've always heard that 5'7" - 6'1" is a good height for a climber. But in the end it doesn't matter. Stop worrying about it and just have fun! I'm 5'2". I have to find alternate beta for pretty much everything in the gym or outside, but that's what makes it fun! Take advantage of your height. Who cares if you can't scrunch up? You can make reachy moves that most short people would find near impossible without crazy alternate beta. Being taller has its advantages just as being short does. I don't think there's a "standard" height. Some of the best female climbers are extremely short, and the best male climbers are around your height. The best female cimber I know is 4'9", and she's climbing harder than a lot of the taller climbers in my area. Moral of this ridiculously long post: Height doesn't matter. Have fun!
