A friends and I are planning a night on the wall as a bit of an exercise to see what it entails. We don't plan to buy portaledges just for this one outing so we have decided hammocks will have to do. The spot is under a big roof in Avon Gorge (UK) and gear is non-existent on the roof itself. As a result the hammocks will have to hand from the cracks adjoining the roof and the wall. Has anyone got any advice regarding this little experiment? (apart from 'don't bother') Cheers Tim

I would bring a bivy sack as well as your sleeping bag. It can get cold hanging up against the rock.

Multiple redundant anchor systems. And remain tied in. Poop tube. And enough rope to bail in the middle of the night if it ain't working out!

Bring a therm-a-rest. Seriously. The hammock will smush your sleepingbag stopping it from insulation while at the same time allowing air to just flow right by, stealing ALL your warmth. It gets really cold, really quick if you don't have a full length inflatable mat. I say thermarest because they're a wee bit stiffer and less hassle then their foamy counterparts.

Do you have actual climbing hammocks or just any old back yard hammocks? There were quite a few innovations in climbing hammocks 35 years ago before ledges became the norm. If you don't have purpose designed hammocks I think it's going to be a long (squished) night.

I've been fortunate enough to either get to a better ledge or bail before spending the night in my Pika 6 point hammock. However, my two of my partners haven't been as lucky. My bf (one of the above) recommends having some sort of spreader bar so that your body doesn't collapse down the mid-plane like a taco. My other partner who had the pleasure opted for hanging in her harness instead. YMMV. Sleep tight.
