I'm looking to go climb indoor at REI tomorrow. I was just curious how accurately rated their climbs are. I can climb some 5.11's and all (or nearly all) 5.10's. Apparently they only allow one climb per day, and I'll only be in town to climb 1 day there.
My biggest worry is that since some indoor climbing areas are sand bagged will REI be sand bagged as well?

Knock it down about eight grades and it should be fairly accurate to real climbing.

Well, it depends on which REI you're talking about. The older, more traditional REI's tend to have more sandbagged grades.

no lie. i went to an R.E.I. up in seattle and i could barely touch the 5.10 grade, while i flash all the .12's @ the new one in rancho cuccumonga.

Yeah... which REI? The one in Denver seems to be spot-on in terms of grades.

The gear ratings can be way off though. What they call R I'd say is really only PG.

I usually find REIs in the east to be graded harder than in the west.

Take whatever you paid for it, and put a 5. in front of it.
If you paid 15 bucks, congratulations! Not only did you get screwed but you can send 5.15 plastic.

I remember back in the day when store walls were just for training. When did it become it's own sport?
You guys would die on the real fake thing. It's time to get out of the retail outlets and start doing some actual climbing on proper gym plastic.

This REI is in Minnesota... bloomington to be exact. I think I'll stick with the 5.10 incase it is sandbagged and also incase I'm over estimating my abilities... I'd hate to get stuck or burnt out not even half way up the 5.11 and have to be lowered

If you're a member don't you get to climb more than one route? and why are you going to REI? just go to Vertical Endeavors in St. Paul.

i don't think i'm ready for real plastic yet... not without a guide or at least someone more experienced.

I went today, I'd say the ratings are pretty much accurate. Maybe a little underrated if anything. At least for the one route that I climbed.
