I was half way up a route once (thankfully only a 5.9 sport) and my belayer called up, "uhh... can you find a good stance? I threaded the gri gri backwards!"

I gotta ask with the backward belay and gri-gri stories...do their partners not check them out before they start climbing? That was one of the first things I learned when climbing is to check your belayer and the belayer check the climber to make sure everything is in place correctly.

Haven't heard but I saw... a beginner taking a belay test at an indoor gym. He was attempting to belay with his belaying device attached to the gear loop on his harness. One of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I feel sorry for all of you and your tales of woe. I have the best climbing partner and belayer. The only way he would let go of the rope is if you pried it from his cold dead fingers. His "name" is "trickster". [ This Message was edited by: astrocrag on 2002-12-06 17:11 ]

Saw this one at my local outdoor gym. A guy was being recertified to belay and had the rope threaded through the belay loop and then up to his ATC, basically the belay loop was taking the place of his belay biner. What amazed me was that the the person who was certifing the kid didn't catch it and I had to yell over at them.

"Dude, hold on, I need to grab another beer" I have said the above, and done the part about peeing with an overhand knot at the belay device. I also told a girl I was climbing with who had never climbed outside before that I started to fall asleep while belaying on the last pitch of White Maidens on Tahquitz. Not too bad, but she was on a body belay. I soon lied and told her I was kidding. That sun is so nice and warm up there... TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

Me:You know how to use a Gri-Gri, right? CTP: Yeah man. Me: (25' off the deck) CLIP CTP: Uh, don't let go. Me: Huh? CTP: Hold on. Me: WTF CTP: Uh, hold on I'm threading this the wrong way... True story.

rck_climber jokes ("Zzzzzzzz"), but every day that she shows up at the gym and rigs my belay, my partner yawns. Could be because she's a new grad student. Outside, she's all attention. But she snoozes in the gym. She hasn't dropped me yet, but I'm waiting for it to happen.

While 18 metres up I heard a mobile phone ring then heard my belayers voice "Hi sexy how are you, how was your day....." then to me "oh sorry mate, can you hold there for a sec" I waited until he came up as second, i abseiled down then as i was belaying him down i tied the rope off and went for a drink [ This Message was edited by: nadroj on 2002-12-08 02:14 ]

While I was climbing a trad route that was just about at my limit "Dude hold on let me take a picture of you" When about to start to second a climb "oh wait your not on belay" My belayer is a bit of an ADD case. This scares me.

Yossarian: At least it's not "Mike, Why did you pull the rope through?". The answer to the question is because "Jake, Why weren't you tied in?".

friend of climber (not the belayer): are you off belay? (asking because the belayer has taken the climber off belay) climber: no climber's friend gets in a body belay while belayer puts her on belay again....

"Wait dude," then I see my belayer getting off the ground (he was sitting while belaying me) and saying, "I have this thing all wrong. Are you in a good spot?" That sucked.
