My gf got a old portaledge from her uncle. He says he bought in 2000 and it hasnt seen much use if any. I havent seen it, but it raised the question of how old do ledges get before people retire them?

what should i look for in terms of wear points before we use it?

yeah you wish! What made you think we weren't going to use it? You people from GA, and to think SC produces more peaches than the peach state! Ofcourse much like in climbing CA still owns.

still curious when people replace there ledges? How many walls does one last etc...

Like any gear.. Check stitching.. check wall side a bit more.. cracks/bends in tubes.. that norm wear and tear in gear.. and worst case your always tied in right?

worst case it snaps on you during a nasty storm..

check it out..serious problems will probably be fairly easy to spot with a good inspection.

If it looks good, and doesn't have faded sun damage, it's likely just fine. Set it up and stomp around until you are convinced it won't rip apart in normal use.. Get your GF in it and "stress test" it. If it survives that, call it good.

In all seriousness, you'd probably shit your pants if you saw some of the Ledges that have made their way up El Cap.

So... If it's not falling apart and can support weight, you're good to go.

Your ledge is from 2000 which is still just a wee lad compairtively. My buddy owns a FISH ledge from the mid 80's with tons of routes under it's straps... and it's still going strong.
