Thinking about climbing Elcap in may, how crowded are Triple Direct and Salathe that time of year?

Last may it was mostly a line up for the nose, not a ton of people on the salathe...

There are times when they are open or have a party or two on them, but don't count on it. Except a wait and try not to get pissed on... It happens on those routes more than you think.

Hey rschap, I was planning on climbing on el cap in May as well. If you need a partner for a route I could help out. I was planning on aid soloing lurking fear, but would definitely be open to a partner. Garrett

Lurking Fear gets pretty wet, if I recall correctly. If you go in May, you may be climbing up a river.

One thing I would suggest if you’re looking for a partner, I don’t think I’ve ever stayed in camp 4 and not run into someone whose partner freaked out after looking up at Elcap in person. The last time I was there a guy was offering to pay anyone to go up with him. The guy I’m going with has done a couple of short walls and I’ve done some of the longer free climbs there so I think we’ll be good.

Remember that the triple direct section of the Nose includes the Great Roof, so you'll potentially have to wait for nose-in-a-day parties to pass in addition to any wall-style climbers. But if you're bringing a portaledge for 3D then you can also camp slightly higher than normal Nose parties as they are stuck on natural ledges =)
