The thing about knowing a lot of people...

Is that sometimes, far too often, you know someone who dies too soon.

Paul Holmes, age 37, was a paramedic in Douglas County, Georgia.

He and I met, as people in EMS often do, and formed a casual friendship based on mutual interests.

We both enjoyed the job, driving ambulances through traffic, lights flashing and sirens blaring, on the way to help some stranger we'd never met.

We both loved teaching new medics, watching them grow and mature and learn.

We both loved good barbecue, cold beer, and SEC football.

We both loved what we did. We were paramedics, and we did what we did because we loved doing it.

And on December 28th, he died from injuries sustained in an ambulance crash on the way to another EMS call... on the way to help another person he'd never met.

Because that's what he did.

Damn. Damn, damn, damn.

Tonight, the Georgia Bulldogs won, I had leftover pork barbecue, and I'd be drinking Sweetwater 420 if I could find it in Colorado.

Rest well, my friend. You've earned it.

Sorry to hear about your friend.
Sometimes life sucks.
Lots of sec teams in the bowl games. I'll lift a cold one to you and Paul during one of them.

Sorry for that to happen.
At least you both love what you do. That's better than many.

Really sorry to hear about your friend.

Our fire truck almost crashed a couple of weeks ago... Super icy out, lost control, but the driver managed to get the chains down before they hit anything. It could have been bad since its an older truck that doesn't have seat belts for the firefighters.

I can feel your pain reno...

I've been clean & sober for over 21 years, and always involved in a 12 step fellowship. I have known intimately literally hundreds in that time, and have burried many close friends who "went back out". One, that I sponsored for a while, just last year. I'm not talking aquantances here, but close friends.

That said... I am greatful for the many intimate relationships I have with all the people I know, both in and out of the fellowship. I like to connect with people.
