Wow, I'm not sure what to say, but quoted for posterity.

look- i'm asking if anybody knows if the gym (yes, it's a gym, not a cliff, ok?) has top ropes set up like the gyms in the us.
if you don't know about this particular place, ok, just say so.

You guys are attacking this person for a legitimate question. The one gym I went to in Quito was free, outdoor and had precisely zero ropes. Not exactly the typical American gym, eh?

Judy, sorry, but I've never been to Rocodromo. Otherwise, I'd be happy to help.

Something like this would have made much more sense:

"Hi, I'd like to know what gear I need to bring to rocodromo (the climbing gym in Buenos Aires)."

To which I would have responded:

"I can't read spanish, but maybe you can find out on their website
http://www.rocodromo.com.ar/main.htm or you could call them."

Unimpressed

thanks so much for your civilized reply. this is the first question i have posted on this site and was a little taken aback at the attitude from these other guys. the people in the rock climbing community i belong to would never have been so unfriendly.
at any rate, if i can't get the info, i'll just pack my shoes and chalk, do some traversing , and save the aggravation of packing my other gear.
thanks again

Judy,

I tried to move your thread so that it was connected through our database, but either I cannot do that anymore or I can't figure it out. Anyway, check this page out for possible answers to your question. (in particular, the third forum post)

http://www.rockclimbing.com/...omplejo_de_Escalada/

Obviously, you are new to the site; welcome!

Please forgive users who have had their fill of all the bull sh!t that accompanies a free forum. Sometimes they are a bit hasty to pull the Troll tag.

I don't read spanish either, but the photos you find on

http://www.rocodromo.com.ar/main.htm
(Thank you acorneau)

make it look like any other gym you would find in the US

In particular, looking at
http://www.rocodromo.com.ar/...pibe%20escalando.jpg

and
http://www.rocodromo.com.ar/...anoramica-muro-2.jpg

Just my guess. Let us know what you find.

I was only at the Quito Rocodromo before the big additions were made. They didn't have ropes then, but they probably do now.

If I were you, i'd go ahead and bring a rope. Ropes and any kind of climbing hardware are absurdly expensive in Quito, and an excellent way to make friends and help the local climbing community is to sell or donate your gear at the end of a trip.

Oh, and strong work by all the folks writing condescending posts about a gym in the wrong country. You may want to consider only posting about countries you've actually been to.

Yup, this is where I went...

Not a rope in the place, other than what we brought with us. But like atg200, I was there before the additions.

Hi JUDY!

I am going to the rocodromo in QUITO in 30 mins. I came on this site to ask the same questions as you.

I`m currently here staying with friends (who don`t climb). I don`t have rope or draws, I will report my experience later on!

I *MAY* be in quito later on in Feb, in which case I look forward to meeting you at the rocodromo!

Paul

I did a quick search on google and turned up this...
http://books.google.ca/...%20quito&f=false
they say ropes cost 2 dollars to rent and if you rent a rope the staff will belay you.

I went to the Rocodromo in Quito yesterday afternoon.

Entry was $2, to rent a rope was $1, they also rented shoes, harnesses and belay equipment for $1 or $2. They sold chalk for $6, and gave me a tiny bit for free.

There was no staff member to belay. When I asked the woman at the gate in my basic Spanish, she said you always have to come with a partner if you want to climb high.

There is a tall structure, which is actually an apartment building. It has 3 main faces. Only one is not overhanging. The other 2 faces having more difficult routes on. There are 2 bouldering areas, with very good mat set ups. And there is a real rock, brick wall type structure with large metal bars at the top for anchors. This was like nothing I`d climbed before and I liked it alot.

There were some really good local climbers, apparently the Ecuador climbing team, climbing 7a, maybe. There was an English and Aussie guy there who live in Quito and climb there regularly, they were cool and friendly and I climbed with them.

I took lots of photos and will try to upload a few later.

Hope this info is helpful!
