What is used i have seen a couple pics were the harness does not look like a climbing one. If i were to use a climbing harness could i just tie in to the back of it or could this dammage the harness or cause an accident.

I don't see how it would hurt the harness, they are made out of webbing, and can withstand extreme forces. I think they just tie in the back, but I'm not sure. Now that I think about it, it dosen't sound too safe.

I wouldn't tie into the back. what I would do is tie to the front, and hold the safety line out of the way with tape. Then it will be out of the way while slacking, but will catch you like normal in a fall.
Anyone see any problems with this?

You can tie into the back of your harness, just make sure you tie in around the entire waist belt part and not just a gear loop. This will be fine, though it will probably hurt like hell if you fall.

HAHAHA, Please dont put your harness on backwards!!
Think about the way they are designed. When you are hanging in them, you are in a sitting position with your legs bent about 90 degrees in front of you
Think about your thighs being bent 90 degrees behind you. Looks kind of like a Yoga position or something.
Wearing the harness backwards would be far more dangerous and FAR more uncomfortable than simply tying into the back of the waist belt.

They are tying off in the front and lightly fixing the rope behind them so that it does not get in the way of walking. If they fall, they are still facing the rope.

Actually most of them are wearing home made "swami" belts. This is just several wraps of webbing (usally two or more inches in width, less if you are brave) secured with a water knot.
Old school, also motivation not to fall.

Every highline walker has his/her different preferences.
Those who wear harnesses, tie in normaly and then tape their leash behind them. Like coldclimb said:
"Then it will be out of the way while slacking, but will catch you like normal in a fall."
And then there's the guys that like a swami. The swami will cut into you if you take a leash fall (which is avoided at all cost). But it's low profile (sometimes the leg loops of a harness catch).
I don't think there's anything wrong with tieing into the back of a harness, it just defeats the pupose of leg loops. In other words, you may as well be wearing a swami.
BTW, for those who might ask: A swami is a length of 3" tubular nylon webbing, wraped around your waist several times and finished with a overhand-folow-through or water knot.
I personaly use a swami, then two lengths of dynamic climbing rope tied into the slackline with three carabiners.
