ok, newbie question again....
I see all these threads about new shoes and people asking "how much smaller did you go below your street shoe size?"
How do you guys do that? I have no idea what my "street" shoe size is. That's the worst place for variability that I've found. I range from a 9 1/2 to an 11 depending on how screwy their lasts are. I would think everybody would ask how the size compares to a 5.10, or a Scarpa, or a Boreal.
I am getting ready to buy my first pair of climbing shoes (probably Mad Rocks - don't tell funk) and since I won't get the luxury of trying them on I went to *a shop* and tried on different brands of climbing shoes to find my "size" and hopefully I can catch the cross reference size with that.

I dunno - buying shoes sight unseen is a little risky in my book. Personally I think you'd be better off buying another brand of shoe that you can actually try on before you buy. But then again I've got funky feet and really have to hunt to find shoes that don't cripple me.

Hey Heelhooker,
I got the same prob. I want to buy a pair of madrocks too, but I also have to order them. When you get yours, tell me how their sizing compares to Boreal's.

Every street shoe and hiking boot I've ever bought was the same size. My two pairs of climbing shoes are a half size smaller. All of my shoes fit as I'd expect so street shoe size may be meaningful to most of us. My wife reports that her shoew sizes are consistent too so maybe you are buying some oddball shoes?

Shoe size is a funny thing for me! In street shoes my last shoes where size 11 before that 10(felt small) Now I have Kayland trotter low aproch shoes is a size 8. Thats a huge jump!! Then I got me feet mesured and they are a full size apart from each other.
now If I was go by some rule of thumb for down sizing my climbing shoes I would be crazy. Say the rule was drop two sizes in a 5.10 shoe. From 11 that would be a size 9
(too big) from size 10 it would be an 8 (ok as a long route shoe) from size 8= size 6 (never get my feet into them)
I would always try before I buy!!

Does anyone know how long it will be before you can find mad rocks at climbing shops?
On the other hand, I've heard that the Mad Rock sizes are about th same as 5.10's. The Mugens fit similarly to the anasazi velcros & the sharks fit like the 5.10 Mocasyns

i have to say always try them on. i would never by a pair of shoes, street or climbing unless i tried them on first.

hay man, whatever shoes you do get, make sure you get something that you'd already tried on. everybody has different feet thus everybody has a different ideal shoe.
climbing shoes need to have nothing less than a perfect fit. This'll probably be a dillema if you want to get the madrocks. (I won't get them myself until I've tried them on too ). The last thing you need is to have shoes that fit bad.
same thing goes for harnesses. Try them on and tie into them before you buy one.

here is my two cents I just got the hookers(supposed to be the hooker zips but they sent the wrong shoe). I wear a street shoe of 10 and my la sportivas are 8 1/2. So I tried a size nine in mad rocks and they feel a little small. So I am now thinking of going up a half size but they might stretch. there it is

No matter what size I wear in "American" I wear a European size 45. Translation : I wear anywhere from 11-13 American, but I always wear a size 45 European. I'm sure you could ask a store for your European size. Hope this helps.

Oh, don't get me wrong! I'd never argue that trying shoes on before you buy isn't the way to go... and demoing is even better. It's just that when you live somewhere fairly remote you get used buying mail order/internet and if they don't fit... send 'em back and try again. I did make the drive to Anchorage last week and wasn't pleased with the selection or the prices.
How I wish I had gone up there and found some "value" shoes like the Mad Rocks or Funk's Bufo's!!! I'd have tried, buyed, and been very happy.
