I saw this guy climbing next to me while belaying on a sport route that was way over his head. He struggled with the crux for over 10 minuites. He finaly got past the first bolt. He yelled "resting" down to his belayer. Then he began climbing again. To my horror i realized he didnt even clip into the bolt. He slipped right under the second bolt and plummeted to the deck. He snapped both his legs in half and bashed his face in pretty good. Its was funny cause the belayed didnt even notice he didnt clip into the bolt.

You have the respnsibility as a climber to point out those sorts of things. Therefore, it is partly your fault that that happened

Don't get me wrong, I laughed during the opening scene of The Vertical Limit, but that was a movie! This person could have died and trust me, being close to death while climbing is not a happy feeling. And you're sitting there laughing at it like its some crappy Fox "reality" special ("Up next: 'When Puppies Explode III'"). Its one thing to laugh at and correct the gumbies in the gym doing something wrong. Its another thing entirely to laugh at the poor bastard who won't be learning from his mistakes anytime soon.

While I agree the events described of are not "funny" (if this isn't a trawl), don't try to pin the injured party's misfortune on this guy. Do any of you blurt out "Stick in a piece!" to someone climbing near you that is running it out? It is up to the leader to decide when and how to place gear, including whether they want to clip a bolt or not. The leader accepts the risks, that is how it has always been with climbing. Now, I will agree it sounds like the injured just f'd up, and maybe a verbal reminder was in order, but that reminder needed to come from either the injured's belayer or the injured's own brain, not some group climbing nearby. Not to defend virus for he does seem rather insensitive but I think he may have been using the term "funny" as in "wierd" at least that's what I *hope* he meant. I personally think he should have said, "hey you missed the bolt", just in case he didn't know he missed it. So, the crux was before the first bolt, huh? The more I read this, the more I question it's validity. It seems to me that 10 minutes is quite a long time to struggle at any one spot without peeling right there from burning out. As a side-note the belayer in this story sucked ass for not noticing and saying something.

Personally I think the original post is full of sh't. If the route was that hard that he had to do a ten minute boulder problem to get to the first bolt, what was there to rest on after he got past the crux without clipping the first bolt. Secondly, the is no way his belayer could miss the fact that he missed the first bolt if it was that hard of a route that he was thrashing for the first ten minutes. Last of all, if it is true, why was did the leader skip the bolt if the climb was that hard. Just too many wierd things to believe. If I am the one full of it and the story is true, then virus should have said something and not just let it happen.

this can't be true after a hard crux the one thing a climber would be focused on would be the next bolt. especialy if there inexperianced. That and it would have had to be the worst belayer in the world to not say somthing about the climber resting without pro-in and ground fall potential. That chance that two people this dumb would meet and decide to climb is statisicly un likley. People that dumb are very rare and don't live very long.

yup, gotta love the old saying; "its only funny untill someone gets hurt, then its hilarious!" then again, i think that applies more to skateboarding. gotta love watching those dumbasses fall of railings and shit. ya, rockclimbing is like the only sport that i dont laugh at. i see friends crash or i pull endo's mountain biking and thats funny but not climbing. Of course there are exceptions though; i cant watch vertical limit with a straight face.

I wasn't there so I don't have a play by play but their are 2 points I'd like to make from the story you told. 1) This isn't FUNNY! 2) It isn't Virus's fault this guy fell. Had he (Virus) noticed earlier that the guy hadn't clipped in then he should have spoken up. But if you noticed close to the next clip I'd have told him to go for that clip. Think about it, downclimb through a crux this guy struggled with, or go for the second clip. Maybe my logic is skewed.

funny... ???? i don't see how snapping both legs and a smashed face being "funny"... if you had really seen it happen and you did notice that he forgot to clip in and could deck, you had a social responsibility to let him know... Sorry, BUT nothing funny in that "story".

Sorry, I don't have any experiences that qualify as that kind of funny. Hey, as long as we are here, why don't we speculate? Maybe he did not have enough draws to finish the route and clip the anchors at the top, so he was saving them. Maybe he was out of shape and fatigue kept him form thinking. Maybe he grew up under power lines. Maybe everyone should just calm down a bit. Rock climbing is dangerous. He obviously did not make the best choices, but I can't say that I always do. Injury is a relaity you just have to deal with. If laughing about it helps, I don't think that that is necisarily bad. If there had been a casualty, then it is normally not apropriate to laugh. This guy got hurt because he either did not know how to lead, or was defying common climbing safety. If I chuckled, it was becuase of a "There but for the grace of God go I," kind of realization. I have been lucky enough not to have been seriously injured for my mistakes. But if I had to be in a cast, I would want it to be from something honorable, like climbing. Could you imagine slipping in the tub and breaking a bone? That would be so embarassing. Oh, well, enough rambling.

Watching someone deck isn't funny. We do take responsibility into our own hands as climbers to climb safely since it is a dangerous sport. But I don't see this as a laughing matter. I've seen people mess up a rap, and come done from the top, no one in my group laughed, no one in the other group laughed. This post sounds a lot like a troll, cuz i don't think any climber would actually laugh out loud at some poor guys misfortune, stupidity, mental block, or phony braveness. I'd love someone to tell me if I missed something that could save my life. I've said my piece

Big apology for implying that Virusv66 was actually laughing. I took that from the context, but he never specifically states that he started laughing. As mentioned over a page ago, maybe he meant "weird" when he said "funny." My earlier point still stands, but it bears mentioning that the words "Then I started laughing" or anything to that affect were never mentioned. So continue your rants based on that, please.

Things like that are never very funny at the moment it happens, but its freakin halarious when you look back at instances like that, and think to yourself, "Dang that was stupid!". If it was me with the broken legs; I'd be laughing my @ss off. Several weeks later of course. I'm sure thats all Virus meant. Did anyone happen to see the new Jackass movie? Millions of people in the US have laughed their @sses off while watching the Masochistic and Sadistic antics of the main guys in the movie. Just my two cents on the issue.
