Perhaps Unimpressed

If we try hard enough we may get this one tossed to the camp ground too!

P.S.- where's Magnus been? I'd expect him in these middle school themed shenanigans as well!

I don't know. I haven't seen him in a few weeks. I have heard rumors of exhaustion. I think he might be resting in a facility somewhere.

You read my mind. Climbing comps are very fun o watch, but neither are swim meets, s anything is possible.

As climbers, why would we not want climbing to be an Olympic sport?

I think his response was great. More publicity = more people = more lines at the crag. Climbing spots are a scarcity in the truest sense of the word.

More people= more publicity= more money / more awareness for access issues= more places to climb. Are lines at your crag really that big of an issue?

And really, how many people watch the Olympics and say oh that's cool, I'm going to go try that! I know I just watched the Luge on the Olympics and that it looked like great fun! There is no way I will EVER do it though, and I'd be willing to bet that would hold true for climbing.

If anything, climbing in the Olympics will give the pretentious, "hardcore", climbers on this forum a boost to their already inflated egos. When Joe Smith from next door sees climbing in the Olympics and asks " you do that?" they can reply " No, that's plastic , I only climb outdoors"

And I know this will be a controversial statement on this forum, but God forbid there's enough money in climbing to support all but the most elite athletes. If Olympic participation brings in enough money to support some of the climbers who struggle to devote their lives to climbing, then that is a great thing.

hell yeah. the only downside is people that actually DO go out and try would probably die on their first outing.

More likely, people who want to try it would go to their local gym for 2 weeks and then never climb again. Or they might hire a guide service, decide it's something they like, and become a contributing member to the Climbing community.

Mostly because people would think that climbing on artificial wall does constitute real climbing.

More lines, yes, some places are crowded and it would make a difference.

Remember, France is pretty far ahead of the game in competition climbing. Their coach once asked," why climb on real rock, it doesn't count."

In all honesty, I don;t watch the Olympics now, and climbing would not cause me to watch any more often.

I think America is the big committee member that is fighting to keep it out. Mostly because Americans are not as competitive in the field of competition climbing.

I do think awareness of the sport will help improve access issues for sure.

I personally think it would be amazing!

Yes, they are. You must be a wyoming climber.

But seriously, when has the media's involvement in any overly hyped-up event ever turned out for the best?

And access, its not an issue until its an issue. When it becomes an issue, the real locals either rally behind it, or they don't. It seems pretty democratic to me. Why do you WANT climbing in the olympics?

I don't think it's a sport personally. I think climbing is more of a personal escape/lifestyle/way of combat/philosophy than it is a sport. To call climbing a sport is to do it a great and unfortunate dis-service. Sports have rules, regulations, yard sticks....... I think martial arts deserve a place in the olympics much more than pulling on plastic holds does. At least in the short term.

If we include "rock" climbing in the olympics, we might as well include alligator wrestling, or food fights. Shit, bikini pudding wrestling at the very least qualifies as a better sport than climbing in my mind.

Spurt climbing really isn't that cool to watch for most people. That's why it got nixed from the X-Games. That's it in a nutshell. Not gonna happen.
