After climbing there for 4 years, the only sport climbing area in SW Virginia (near Abingdon) that I know of appears to have been closed. It's like I've lost a best friend. The only gym in the area has also closed. Where do we go now???

I assume your talking about HV... goodluck with that; the owner is not going to grant access in the near to present future. My advice is to turn towards NC-Boone for climbing. Also backbone rock is an option for a quick day trip.
Edited-Since your from Tn, the Obed would be a good option for you too.

No, it's not Hidden Valley. There's a sign in Damacus pointing the way to Backbone Ridge. There's a couple of different routes here, and really easy to set up as well because of the stairs here.

When I mentioned Hidden Valley I was replying to the OP. And as far as this "Backbone Ridge" you speak of... I believe your talking about Backbone Rock, as in the area on located on the banks of Beaverdam Creek right?... even the sign in Damascus calls it Backbone Rock.

I think it would be around a four or five hour drive but you could head down toward chattanooga... Tons of stuff around there as I'm sure you already know...

I don't know...this thread is so old that I can't remember what I was thinking when I posted. For sport routes, I think there are a few in Bozoo, WV. I never had the honor of climbing in Hidden Valley due to the closure. Backbone Rock is fun for top-roping, but the routes are really short.
SWVA has ton of untapped climbing potential. There are many exposed cliffs near where I grew up (Coeburn) that have never been climbed on. I've seen pictures of people climbing at Flag Rock in Norton, VA but I have no idea how they set up anchors there. There were also supposed to be bolts on Hanging Rock in Dungannon, but I stood at the base of it searching for them and never saw any. I think someone needs to bolt more routes in SW VA!
New River Gorge is amazing for sport-climbing!
