I am in the market for a brighter headlamp for leading in the dark, so I'm looking for something considerably better than the Tiika Plus I have now. Anyone out there have something they're fond of?

The new Tikka XP gets my vote - They redesigned it and put better performance in the old/other and smaller/lighter tikka housing. I was impressed when I first tried it. The Plus was redesigned as well I believe - not sure if you have the old or new one. http://www.petzl.com/...pka2-series/tikka-xp

Take al look at the Everready headlamps. They're in Walmart for less than $10. Mine's more than adequate for camping. Haven't tried leading. Everybody has LED headlamps these days. It's not necessary to buy a premium brand.

It's not necessary to buy a premium brand. Cheap LEDs, cheap circuits, cheap switches, cheap circuits, no water resistence... you get what you pay for. I've got a few cheap headlamps, one in the glovebox for working on the car, two in the trunk attached with magnets to give me extra light, one in my desk at work, one in the kitchen. One has a burned out LED, one has a broken latch, I've thrown out two that just randomly died. But they were cheap and work well enough for general purposes, but I wouldn't take them out on the trail. I've got a BD in my pack that has worked consistently and evenly. I trust it's not going to let me down when I need it. Mine's not that good for climbing though as it can be a bit blinding even on the low setting. My GF's headlamp has a diffuser lens which helps a bit. Haven't lead anything in the dark, just some bouldering.

For typical just in case type use, I'd stick with the Tikka. But Ive used this thing before for 24h bike races, and its never let me down: http://www.geomangear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4_41&products_id=138&zenid=ovejg8ccflnqq8pa39vp86bgm4 Fairly cheap, super lightweight, water resistant, etc, etc.

I've been through a couple Apex's. They are pretty good, but the best light for the money is this one http://www.4sevens.com/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=1774 225 lumens for $67.50 light and built tough You have to spend $300+ on a Stenlight if you want a better headlamp.
