Does anyone have any idea if the campground in Red Rocks gets crowded the first two weeks of April? I'll be there and looking for a spot for the weekend starting on Friday the 9th. Just curious what folk's experiences are with regards to availability that time of year. I believe it is first-come first-serve for individuals. Thanks.

The locals drive there on Friday and leave on Sunday. The camping on the weekends in that area is usually jammed, but week days are pretty empty. Is RR the same? I know this is a busy time of year, but if we get to the campground at, say, 8 or 9am that Friday morning, do you think we'll have a hard time finding a place? In other words, do the "locals" who can drive there usually get there Friday afternoon, or is the place jammed all week during the week , thus making a jump on the late-arrivers a useless endeavor? I just don't want to get shut out of either a cheap hotel or the campground, so sorry for the additional, detailed question and thanks for the response. Greg

Greg This is like asking us to predict the weather. You may get lucky and get a spot but it's Vegas...climb during the day and get a cheap hotel and party at night.

Greg When I camped there in April 3 years ago, we got there on Thursday at dusk, and campground was mostly full, but still had couple spots available. Filled up by night-time, and there were no spots available on Friday. Who knows how it would be... But if you are flying, IMO it is WAAAYYY better to stay in a hotel. With airline fees for checked luggage these days, you would end up paying more to shlep your camping gear through the airports than you would by staying in a hotel. The best thing would have been to reserve hotel and flight simultaneously, b/c you get crazy-good deals that way...

that campground stays pretty full throughout the week. Spent 10 days there last year. sometimes a few spots opened up but they were snatched up prety quickly. Like was said above, it depends on your trip overlap with other groups leaving

And just in case you were unaware GM, the campground is a pit. Windy, dusty, noisy, not a tree in sight. I love camping and climbing, but not at Red Rocks. TS

The campground is pretty full all week during the good temperatures of spring and fall.

Red Rocks campground and camping in Joshua Tree would be on my list of really-didn't-care-for-that-camping-experience. Things we do for climbing...

TS awesome folks, thanks! this is really good info. looks as if we've got a decision to make. and yeah, I've heard this CG is a pit, but for $8 vs. $100 on a weekend...I dunno, maybe I'll get there and think, "holy jesus why did I do this?"

Stay in a hotel. I got a suite at Tuscany for 36 a night during the week and 90 on the weekend a couple weeks ago. After all day outside, hot tub and all you can eat crab legs beats the heck out of a tent and camp food.

my super secret casino is the Suncoast, which is about 20min away. It's not glam or anything, but it works. Also cheaper than bonnie springs. Is the Tuscany further than 20min? And I don't do the Vegas thing at all, so there's no need for me to gamble or see shows or anything like that. I just climb baby.

Tuscany is a couple blocks from Bellagio on Flamingo. 25 mins to RR. I liked the rooms because they were clean and big 600sqft if I recall, fridge etc is included. Two pools two hottubs three restaurants in the casino. Don't gamble so no opinion there. Best deal on a room I've gotten in a while.

Great timing! I'll actually probably be there at the same time! Fight you for a tent spot.

If you want to crash on the floor inside then I'm sure we can work out a price. Just an option. We fly in the 8th and check out on the 12th.

For future reference, some hotels in Jean/Primm offer rooms for about $20/night weekday and $45/night weekend. Cheaper if you have a military ID (I paid $15/19 last time). If you are coming from the west, an even better option. Nice rooms. And with as many traffic lights as there are on Charleston now, the drive is not that much longer than from the Strip or downtown Vegas. TS
