Hi,

I'm new here, so if the topic has already been discussed please let me know.

I'm going to NW part of the country in June and July for climbing with some sightseeing trip. What climbing areas would you recommend: bolted, 5.9-5.12 and not deadly for the 7 years old kid :-)

I'm thinking about Smith Rocks, City of Rocks and Red Rocks (too hot?).

Every suggestion will be appreciated.
Thnx,

Marcin

I wonder how angry the community would be if people started bolting Squamish...

ED: actually, while i was told there wasn't, there appears to be a decent ammount of bolted routes there.

Is the sport in squamish decent?

Looks rad...

Smith is going to be pretty hot in June/July and you will likely find yourself chasing shade. Exit 32/38 near seattle has quite a bit of sport and is still climbable throughout the day in those months, but isn't the greatest rock or sightseeing. Leavenworth has some bolted routes and has a great variety of sightseeing, although the majority is trad.

Squamish sport climbing is quite good. Bolted 5.8-5.10b climbs tend to be less than vertical slabby with heavy footwork. There is quite a bit of climbing starting in the hard 510s and extending into all the 5.11s levels the climbing is more technique then power or power endurance.

They shot the cougar that was eating the children so the 7 year old should be safe enough.

A car is required to access most of the sport climbing.

There is a lot of bolted routes in Squamish, and it's quite good. Probably the largest variety would be in Cheakamus Canyon. For mainly hard stuff, the Petrifying Wall is quite good and there is some good slab at Seal Cove and Shannon Falls. There is also a couple good routes near the lake in Murrin Park. There should be more too, but those are the areas that I have visited.

If you do go to Squamish, I would recommend it in July. July and August have the least amount of rainfall.
