I'm an intermediate climber living in Virginia that has a business trip June 13 - 17 to Phoenix. I'm wanting to add up to a week before or after this to climb, canyoneer, take a climbing course (like trad lead) or ???. I'm willing to add a long days drive if needed. Any advice on good guides, climbs, good climbing school, or just point me in the right direction. I want to take advantage of my opportunity to experience this beautiful area. Thanks, Tim

My first point of advice would be prepare to drive up to Flagstaff and Northern Arizona, maybe Mt Lemmon near Tucson, as it gets too damn hot to climb around here that time of year.

Thanks Zeke - anyone have suggestions for a guide or other connection. I prefer a recommendation rather than a google link if possible. Thanks..... Tim

There's excellent climbing around Flagstaff, and it's not a bad drive. I did it for a day-trip once when I had a business trip to Phoenix. GO

If you are looking to sport climb there are a ton of possibilites. My suggestion is to hit a Phoenix area REI or climbing gym (Phoenix Rock Gym,AZ on the Rocks, or Climbmax Gym) and pick up some "Karabin Guides". These are little fold out maps which are available for a lot of the major AZ crags which have, sometimes, hundreds of routes listed with rating and a quick synopsis and review. They are not infallible, but definitely extremely useful. Check out anywhere in the Flagstaff area, especially Jacks Canyon and 'The Pit'. I've also heard Lemmon is bearable in the summer heat, and there are no shortage of routes. Good luck!
