Not to be a jerk, but do you think the speaker in the film meant 'piton', and either pronounced it funny or you mis-heard?

Yes, they are spelled "Titons" and were made by Forrest Mountaineering. I still own a full set. Haven't used any of them since 1979, however.
They are the "T" shaped thingies mixed in with the hexes and SMC Camlock.

Yep - I'm pretty sure that it was Forest.
They came in lengths even longer than pictured.

The film was Scary Faces by Sender Productions about Jules Verne in Eldo. In the film, there was an Eldo park service employee? ranger? credited only with the name Birdman who referenced Titons. So, the film is not recent and Birdman appeared to be in his 50's or 60's.

My first trad lead was about 3 years ago with a friend's rack. I couldn't figure out why he had multiple sizes of angle iron on his rack. FWIW, Tonto in Red Rocks takes Titons quite well.
