Change cable on ATC belay device

Hi,

The cable on my ATC is completely worn.
I am finding a way to change that cable.
Do you have any advice or did something similar ?

The problem I have is to find a way to attach/ glue the cable to the atc ...So far I cannot see any solution.

I known a belay device is only 10$ or less. But it had some sentimental value since that is my first ever belay device !

Thanks for help

The cable doesn't really do much important except keep the belay device attached to something and stop it from sliding too far on the rope. You could probably drill out the old cable and sodder or epoxy in a new one. If you don't have the tools it will cost you much more than $10. And it's also unsafe to modify climbing equipment and you will die.

I've seen ATC's with just a bit of cordellette to replace the cable. Really, the only reason why it's there is to keep your ATC close to your harness by not allowing it to travel up your rope as you're belaying.

Drill out the swaged holes with a drill.

Replace cable with 3 or 4mm cord.

If you are feeling real fancy, you can run the cord through some small diameter flexible hose.

TIP: dip the cord ends in glue before tying the knots to ensure they never come undone.

How the heck do you wear out the cable before the device is worn out?

And that's not an ATC up there^^^.

The cable is worn out at the connection with the ATC. I guess because the cable is not of good quality , about 2/3 of the cable string are broken.

ATC, is a generic name for belay device here in our area . Wild Country call it a Variable controller...

Your best option is to hang it from your rearview mirror next to your fuzzy dice and buy a new one.

If you really must try and fix it and want a shot at sincere advice post some real pics of the device in question, showing the cable damage as well as how the cable connects to the device.

There's probably some sort of brazed connection and therefore it's not easily repaired. You can certainly try and drill out the cable but at what point has your bungled repair job made the device less than trustworthy?

don't worry about it. at all.

if you are worried about the cable breaking while carrying it clipped to a biner, just clip the biner through the slot the rope goes through instead of through the cable. May not work with some biners. No refunds.

Here are some images :
On this side of the cable, I reiforce the base of the cable with some epoxy but it is not ideal.

Seems to me that ATC would make a fine and sentimental Christmas Tree ornament, while a new one would be inexpensive and possibly safer.

JMHO, of course.

There are pretty much two ways to strip the plastic off a belay devices cable.

One is to load it weird so it gets rubbed off. Most belay devices have a hint of this.

The other is to be looking at your belay device and think, "I bet this would look sweet if I stripped the plastic off" and so you grab the pocket knife or a lighter.

So what I would do, especially considering yours is a rather flat device, is cut the cable off completely and store it in a chalk bag pocket as a spare.

Don't get sentimental over belay devices. My first device was a Tuber, I have no idea where it is. Maybe with an ex-girlfriend.

The metal on the edge of one of the slots isd worn to a fairly sharp edge too.

Throw it in the bottom of the gear bin dude. Get a new one.

You're going to go through several devices if you stick with this sport whether you Rube Goldberg this device or not.

are you serious? Shocked If the cable is worn what do you think is wrong or the condition with the actual device? Remember lives depend on it! It's 10-20 bucks for a new one, BUY ONE!

Fail.

Cable is not structural, wear on it does not mean the device itself is worn.

Fail? His advice, BUY A NEW DEVICE is spot on. And besides, the picture I saw, the device had apparent wear on it.

I have several devices easily as worn if not worse than yours (not such sever cable damage though). They lurk at the bottom of the gear bin, or in the garage, or in the closet... I dunno, I may have thrown some away. Gear can't be sentimental, it just doesn't last. Its like getting all sentimental over your pet goldfish; its gonna die eventually.
