are you serious? Shocked If the cable is worn what do you think is wrong or the condition with the actual device? Remember lives depend on it! It's 10-20 bucks for a new one, BUY ONE!

Fail.

Cable is not structural, wear on it does not mean the device itself is worn.

Fail? His advice, BUY A NEW DEVICE is spot on. And besides, the picture I saw, the device had apparent wear on it.

While I agree that buying a new device is best, "if the cable is worn what do you think is ... the condition with the actual device" is not necessarily true. The cable can (and does) get worn out by bending back & forth, getting squished in the pack or rack, etc.

It is easier to buy a new one.

It has wear, but the WCVC is one big honkin' chunk o' metal, it would take quite a bit more wear to make it unusable. There may be an edge developing, but that could easily be taken care of, it's not like the old reverso that wears itself into a knifeblade.

I have the same device with similar wear in the slots. Even more damaged on the outside when I used it to hammer out a stuck nut. I would still use it if I hadn't switched to an ATC guide.

You're just nitpicking internet warrior-style.

The advice was spot on - replace the fucking device. Jesus!

Bwahahaha!

I'm sure you would.

But you didn't.

You replaced it instead.

The OP has likely already done so as well.

Actually, it's not retired, it's sitting in my trunk as a backup when others forget. I've been belayed with it, but don't use it myself.

I switch to the ATC Guide since it has more friction and takes less effort to hold falls with skinny doubles, not because of the wear. Otherwise I'd still be using it.

The OP should ask his friends/partners if they're comfortable being belayed on a modified device.

But it had some sentimental value since that is my first ever belay device !

I suggest melting it down and making it into a ring. That way you can be with your precious always. Perhaps you'd even have enough material to make some metal knuckles. That way you could head punch anyone who talks shit about you getting sentimental over gear.

My first device was a Tuber, I have no idea where it is. Maybe with an ex-girlfriend.

What a coincidence. I left a tuber with your ex-girlfriend too.

Seriously, is your life, the time, and materials spent on fixing a broken piece of metal worth your life?

If the thing has sentimental value frame it and nail it to the wall. You'll live longer to enjoy the memories...
