Boxcar's New Routes, Adopt-A-Crag 2 Perhaps???  (North_America: United_States: Pennsylvania: Southeastern_Region: Boxcar_Rocks__aka_Chinese_Wall_)

Hey Boxcar climbers,

I've taken a bit of a hiatus from climbing recently, but am back and feeling a strong summer coming on. I recently introduced my girlfriend to climbing and as a Boxcar local, our first outdoor excursion was naturally to this crag. That being said, let's chat about some things.

First, I noticed what I think are some new sport lines. It's been a while for me so maybe I'm wrong but is the two bolt line to the right of the whale's head new? And what about the three lines all together, by the tree farthest right on the main wall? I know there was always atleast one line there but I'm certain that atleast one, if not two of the adjacent ones are new too? I appreciate any beta.

Second, I am working a job where I have 22 days per month of free time, and intend to use most of it to climb. Since I was unable to attend the crag clean up a couple of years ago, I am wondering who, if anyone, would be interested in a weekend of clean up and trail maintenance/building. Maybe it would lead to some more frequent climbing partners and route development in the area. Who knows. If anyone is interested let me know and we'll see if we can set it up again.

Thanks
Challenger

I would definitely be up for another adopt-a-crag! The first one was a great success. We cut back some brush on the undercliff trail, collected 5 bags of bottles, cans and trash, and built the stairway. Last time I was up there, the trail was choked with thick brambles, there was glass and trash everywhere, and the stairway was in ruins.

Any weekend would work for me. I'll contact Rob and see if we can get the key to the gate again, and maybe some supplies.

The new bolts were placed a few years ago. They were placed on lines that were toproped years ago, but never led on gear (due to the lack of). Nearly all of the remaining lines were led on gear, despite the fact that some of them only have a piece or 2 in 50 feet. The new bolts are nice because they allow you to lead these routes, which I think is much safer than walking around on top of the fin and trying to setup a toprope with static lines. Also, many of the old, rusty, and stolen top anchors have been replaced. Many of these are below the edge, so that they cannot be vandalized again (this is a big party spot). The easiest way to set up any of the climbs now is to lead them. They can still be toproped using a ton of webbing draped over the top of the fin, and now that the have good top anchors, you can safely walk off. Information on the climbs at boxcar can be found in the Central PA guidebook. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask me as well.

Lets do this adopt-a-crag!

Count me in too!

I had a good time with Rob and Joe and we got alot of the brush cut back then.

I can bring the trail tools, hard hats, and a few strong backs.

I'll just need a heads up on what gear to pull from the inventory.

I've been working with some good, solid crews in the Allegheny NF, maybe some arm twisting could get them to come down with me as well.

Stay in touch.

Long happy trails and safe climbing,
Jae

Hey Jae, good to hear you'll be along again! Maybe you can bribe your trailblazin' friends with some climbing lessons? We can have ropes set up on the classics for when people want to take a "break". Anyone else interested?

I like what I'm reading. I hope more people will jump on board. Is there somewhere we can get this thread moved that might get more exposure to the readers? Joe, you mentioned someone having the connections to get the gate opened, do you think we could get a special permit to allow camping for one night there so we could have the whole weekend to work?

That might be pushing it, since we'll be fighting off locals for the site as well. I wouldn't trust my car in that lot overnight either, but I'll ask. There is some state Forest within 15 mins that we can possibly use with a group permit. I'll do some digging.

Valid point for sure. It's not really an issue for me as I live 40 minutes away. I was thinking of anyone with a substantial drive being able to stay somewhere near by. What SF are you referring to? Weiser?

This sounds like a great idea. I'm new to rock climbing and would love to help out if the date suits me. I have been here before, but just to check out the rocks, I have not climbed there...yet...

And since I'm new to the sport, I wouldn't mind meeting more experienced climbers and learning. Just let me know of the dates and I'll try to be there to help clean the place up.

After looking at my work schedule, I have two weekends that will work awesome for me. July 17 & 18 or August 14 & 15. These are the only weekends where I have off both days, but if they won't work for most of you, speak up because I can swap shifts if absolutely necessary. Thanks for the interest, spread the word.

One vote for the August weekend. Any other preferences out there? I personally would prefer the July weekend, so that we can enjoy the fruits of our labor for an extra month, and because I'm excited and impatient, but I'd like to see as many people out as possible so lets hear which date is best for all.

Unfortunately, I have a 4 day motorcycle trip planned over the weekend of the 28th so that doesn't work for me. Any other suggestions?

So I'll pull the trigger on that and say the 11-12th weekend will be the official crag day. I do not however have the connections with the PGC to open the gate so I will now pass the torch.

I'm wondering if this is still going on. Ive mostly done high ropes stuff and I'm trying to get into climbing more and would love to meet others who could show me a thing or two, as well as do all I can to help out with the clean up. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
