I was leading Beavis. I arrived at the top and reached for a hold to finish it off when I was startled by a sudden movement; the sound of someone playing maracas nearby--the sound that every climber dreads as their heads pop up into new crevices in the rock face--caused me to pull my hand back. As I did so, a baby rattlesnake sprang from its coiled position and snatched at my hand, missing it by scant inches and causing me to lose my grip and take a fall. Holy criminy have I never been more scared climbing!
Watch out for rattlesnakes!
