I am just starting to get a taste of sport climbing and am starting the process of looking for some draws. I have been looking at the Black Diamond Freewires which seem to be pretty good. My main concern is obviously safety over price but i am on a budget. What are the best/safest draws out there for the best price? should i go wire or straight/bent gate? i'm also leaning towards a draw with a thicker dogbone to prevent twisting. Thank you and safe climbing!

Any draws I have ever had the "pleasure" of using that were similar price or cheaper (e.g. OP Dirtbag) absolutely sucked. Although I am not a fan of having a wiregate on the bolt end, it is a good choice for the rope end.

The BEST draw I ever used was the new black diamond Livewire, I tried some a friend had, but at $25 a draw the are a little too expensive for me. Any draw sold at a climbing shop is going to be safe. Until you are pushing into the elite climbing grades and need every advantage possible, most any draw will do. Get what's affordable and go climbing and everything else will work itself out.

The Freewire is a solid draw, both safety and performance wise. If you decide to upgrade later down the road the wire gates will be a lot more useful to you than having a bunch of spare bentgates.

Thank you and safe climbing! My order of (non-price) priorities would be: 1. Keylock nose on bolt end. 2. Thick dogbone. 3. Wiregate on rope end, with reasonable gate clearance. You might be able to find a good price mixing and matching dogbones and biners. The Camp Orbit nylon series seem pretty cheap and give you one and two. I haven't climbed on them so I can't offer a first hand account, however. I'll also second the Livewire rec, with the caveat that these are pretty damned expensive draws.

Thought it doesn't have the thick draw you won't have to worry about that till the harder grades and they are more useful in the trad/multi pitch arena. It's worth the $3 to get the hotwires and positrons vs the nice but VERY plain quicksilver wires.

I think most would agree that the petzl draws or BD livewrie are some of the best for sport climbing. But are more expensive
