A friend gave me a six pack of FS Mini's. Despite being "full strength", I find them too small for virtually all climbing applications. Any suggestions on what to use them for? So far, hanging Christmas ornaments is all I've been able to come up with.

Use them as keychain/leaver biners. You just keep one on your keys at all times, then if you need a leaver biner, you've alwayse got one with you.

who brings their keys climbing? Mine would probably puncture my thigh if I got them caught under my harness.

Hanging cams on my rack. As I always add a runner to my cams. I haven't done it yet, but my other thought was bolt side of my quick draws.

Rudmin wrote: who brings their keys climbing? Mine would probably puncture my thigh if I got them caught under my harness. I've taken plenty of falls with my keys in my pockets and have never had a problem (I almost always have my keys in my pockets when climbing). It sounds like you don't have deep enough pockets if you can somehow get them caught under your harness. I do admit that when my pockets aren't very deep I leave the keys on the ground. Now back to the OP's question, the keychain biner doesn't even necessarily have to be for climbing purposes. Just think of all the situations where having a full strength biner with you would come in handy (let's just forget about the fact that I can't think of a single one right now).

You can use them as your "carrying stuff" biners (shoes, water bottle, nut pick) - then, should you ever need it, you've got a full strength one without having paid a weight penalty. If you believe in backing up your rappels with an autoblock-like knot from your leg loop, you could leave one there. If you have a tall Christmas tree, you could use them to tie down the guy lines.

Use them to fashionably carry your keys, choose a new colour each day to keep things fresh. Or not. Use em to hold things like your personal prussic or a knife on your harness, then you have a leaver biener when you need one. Or even as your gaurda hitch for crevasse rescue.

*Warning - I'm a newbie* I use FS Minis to carry gear on my harness and for attaching shoes/keys/Nalgene/chalk bag to the outside of my pack. Couldn't you also combine them with various length slings to make trad draws?

I'm assuming you've watched the metolius video for their recommended clipping technique? They aren't that bad to clip once you get used to them, one of my partners uses them on cams, and it just takes a different technique for them to work well.

Nice to have something that doesn't carry a significant weight penalty if you aren't likely to need to use it. They're way too small to use for must things, though I will sometimes use them to rack cams with,

Besides climbing... I use one on my keys. Its funny now that I have a full strength biner on my keys how often I use it when I need a full strength one. I have one on the final biner on the pully system for my slack line, it so much smaller than the ovals I use it gives me that extra inch of tightening before I have to readjust the prussik. clipping cord on my nomics because I too cheap to by a spinner leash.

When I first saw them I thought they were just too small to be useful. However, last month I picked up a pack of the new cam-color set on sale at REI and put them on my #1-4 TCU's and #5-6 Power Cams. Got to use them for a couple of days recently and I have no problem unclipping them off my harness and on the rope, or more commonly a sling. I still like the Nanos and the Neutrinos better for general use biners but the Minis seem work well on the cams. If anyone has some Minis they don't like feel free to send them to me.
