I am not sure what kind of anchor you are building, but I have always just built my anchor and then let it hang over the edge. You shouldn't have to be on the face to build it. I am sure that we are building different types of anchors, we should hop on chat some time and have an anchor discussion. Bring you Mountaineering Freedom of the hills book with you which makes it easy to reference pictures and pages. It would definitely be an interesting chat.

I have done exactly what the last post mentioned while climbing at Reimer's Ranch. All the top rope anchors are just over the edge so I just lie down, rig up my cordelette and stand up and pull on it to equalize it and then attach my rope and lower the entire thing back over the edge. Climb On

I misunderstood your note that you were using your own pro. Reimers has fixed anchors over the edge. For the situation that you mentioned, using your own pro, I always carry two 25 foot pieces of 1" webbing and a 50 foot piece. In addition I carry 50 feet of static line. If the pro placement was in question as far as being able to equalize the anchor I would look for something further from the edge and use the webbing or static line. There may be a way to do what you ask but I am not aware of how you could ensure your anchor is equalized unless you build it, drop your line and have someone from below load it from the ground. Climb On
