Should Points for Posts be Eliminated? Are there any among the site's masses believing that all points awarded for the production of posts by a user should be eliminated? Thus far I have found only one logical explanation for doing so, however have found one negative repercussion as well. If points given to users for the amount of posts they have, there seems to be many useless threads created and many meaningless posts simply sprouting among other, well thought out threads. As such, if "points for posts" were to be eliminated, we will see who truly loves helping their fellow man in the climbing community by posting meaningful/helpful things. The negative repercussion: Perhaps many would leave the site after "points for posts" were to be eliminated as they would no longer find any reason to "stick around." Although, would this not be a gain to our online society? Personally, I do not care for points [as] and consequently do not care for whether or not they be eliminated. I am merely curious who believes "points for posts" should stay, and who believes they should go.

If you're going to eliminate points for posts, then, to be fair, you should eliminate them for all forms of contributions. It doesn't make sense to get points for one dorky picture but none for hundreds or thousands of meaninful posts. -Jay

I don't think anyone gets "points" for their post count. Their "total posts" are added up.. hmm, do we get points for posts? If so, what the hell for? It's not like we can see how many points we have unless we are in the top 5 for our state?

Yes, points are given for posts. The reason, I presume, is that they are considered contributions to the site, as are pictures, routes, etc. The only reason we can't see them is because that function has been screwed for several months. -Jay

Do we get points for everything we contribute? I have contibuted alot more in the routes database than I have in forums. I don't know how many points I have, and what is the point to all these points? Are they good for something? In the past, I haven't posted my thoughts to any forums to gain any points, I posted because I wanted to contribute. Either way, I will still contribute to the forums, routes database, and pictures database regardless of any points. Mr. Smylie

I had no clue that points existed when I started coming to this site. They don't inspire me to post more/less or anything else for that matter. I just think it is cool to have a community of people who are familiar enough with the issues around climbing to help each other out. If some people are really happy with the points system, more power to them. It won't effect me one way or the other.

Just get rid of points for community posts and do not show community posts in the post count. Seriously, though, keep it the way it is, makes for great arguments.

The fact that many of you did not know points existed firstly, does not exclude you from the discussion. Do you feel ("yes" or "no") that the points given to those for posting in any forum should continue to circulate? Please state your reason. Informal Pole here people...

I think you're talking about me because i'm in 4th place... It's not because of posts. Hell, I wouldnt really care if my post count got reset, i've actually concidered asking to have it reset because people kept saying that I was just posting to increase my count. Look at wildtrail: he isn't even on the top 15 list. It's called the "route database"

Copied from anoother thread: Quote: Points should be acrued for: -Posting and/or replying to a Forum linked to the FP. -Submitting Photos (the higher the rank, the higher the points.) -Articles -Adding to the Routes DBase. -Submitting Links. -Moderating/Administering Forums. -Adding Ascents to the RDB. The purpose of the points is to accurately reflect who has contributed to the site. "Page Views" contribute what ??? Any user with a LAN can just hit refresh and get 20,000 points a day (something that has been happening which was the basis for this change.) This was brought on by making "page views" not count for points, as they reflect absolutely no content, and can easily be gained by just clicking refresh. Community is the only Forum that does not give points for posts, as this is a climbing site, so points should be acrued for climbing related contributions. So YES, points should be given for climbing related posts.

I forgot "Editoring" for points. And, the change made to remove the points for "Page views" was recinded due to people complaining that they lost points. But since these are not points that accurately show contribution, as intented, they should be removed. Hell, I stand to lose well over 100K. Remove points for page views !!!

I didn't know there were points for anything on this site. I noticed the "Posted Message Count" beside the users name. I think that is very good to have. Nice to see how much someone's posted.
