Hey, I'm currently making the return leg of a road trip from MA to FL. I'll be picking up my girlfriend in Charlotte, NC and was hoping to see if you guys had any good ideas about climbing in either NC, VA, WV or basically anything else between NC and MA. I'm not too experienced with trad/sport so would be hoping for some places that you can set up a top rope on 5.8-5.10ish climbs. Thanks in advance for any information!

Brrrr! I would(seriously) consider a climbing gym. I think there is one near Washington DC. Outside, at this time of year, where you can set TR's.... sounds like an epic in the making!

Really? The weather seemed to be around 50 which doesn't sound so bad, or is it that theres not many TR places near south, and its colder in the mountains?

New River Gorge was 53 with 80% precip today, and will be in the upper 30's next several days forecast Seneca - similar though about 5 degrees warmer

You should check out either Pilot Mountain, which is north of Winston Salem or Crowders Mountain, which is a little bit south of Charlotte and a really short drive from the airport. You can easily set TRs at both places. The wall at Pilot is south facing so a little sun can make a day in the 40s pretty enjoyable. I've been a few time in the past weeks on the nicer days.

If you're starting in Charlotte, check out Crowder's Mountain for top-roping.

Carter (Carder?) Rock in DC is good for top-roping, though the rock is rather polished. I haven't been there for a couple of decades, so I'm going by what it was like in the old days. Mather's Gorge (below Great Falls) offers some good climbing. When you head north, go to the Gunks... epic climbing.

The past few days NC temp has been nice. Im still new so don't have any good recommendations on outdoor climbing in NC but the staff at "the Climbing Place" in Fayetteville NC could probably give you a hand. Either way, its a nice indoor gym worth stopping at if you are driving though.
