I thinking of a trip to SR this spring. I will most likely go alone. How hard is it to find partners in the campground? Rated 0 - 10 [ex. J-Tree = 10 very easy].

Pretty easy getting partners for Smith. If you have no luck in the bivy site, stroll down to morning glory wall and give that a try. I would guess you are looking at 100% chance. I will be there around Spring Break, toss me your dates if you are looking for a partner.

Good to hear that. I got a month to spend, and I'm relatively flexible on departure. What would be the best time to go? How busy is the bivy site during the week? I see by Google maps that there really is no town very close so I imagine a rental car would be a good idea. Unleaa the bivy site looks like Camp 4.

Nearest town is Terra Bonne, a working class town with condos popping up around it, which has basic necceseties (climbing shop, groceries, etc). Redmond is the nearest midsize town about a half hour away offering all the major food offerings and Pub fare. Bend is about an hour away, and offers anything you can hope for in a midsize city (airport, ect.) This particular area, has been hit pretty hard with Crystal Meth, and DO NOT leave shit lying around where thieves can spot it. The Bivy site is just that, bivy only, cant camp at your car, cant cook at the tent site, but has hot showers and toilets. Another option used to be Skull hollow, 20 minutes from the climbing area, but the Meth issue is really prevalent here.... don't leave anything here during the day. It has tried to operate as a pay site over the last few years, but chances are it will be free, as people keep stealing/vandalizing the payment box. Oh, and it would be a little over an hour to hike into town from the bivy site.

That really sounds bad! So it's break camp every day and shove it in the car? Or just valuables that a thief can sell fast?

AT THE BIVY SITE You could likely leave your stuff (there is a caretaker), but I personally would likely pack up my $800 down bag and just leave the tent. AT SKULL HOLLOW Leave nothing you don't want to lose. Good rule is to do as those around you are doing... if nothing is left at the bivy site during the day.... (or atleast nothing that looks nicer than what you got) then pack it up.

I've spent 12-15nights at the bivy site and never had or heard of a problem with property loss. This was the week after Memorial Day, Memorial Day weekend, and around July 4th over the past 3 years. However, I can see the risk. The bivy area can be somewhat quiet during the day.

Thanks That sounds more reasonable. I had visions of tweekers wandering the meadows like something out of a George Romero movie.

Also, for anyone else reading this, the driving times above are way off. Redmond is 10 minutes away by car and Bend is 25 minutes. I drive each on a regular basis.
