Coming to your fine nation on the tenth of March for One month. Mainly to ski at Squaw.
However, I am chucking in the tools and am desperate for ice to climb for at least two days.
Where is closest? Can you send me a guide for that place?
Anyone keen to join and help a WI3-5 aussie ice climber (an oxymoron I know) out?

Tahoe area is a strange place for ice.
We have exceptional skiing amazing rock-climbing..
and weak ass shite ice.. most of the time. There are many short mixed routes that change dramatically from week to week. as in one week they exist .. next week they are gone.
the only reasonably long good ice on a regular basis is 150 miles south on 395 at leevining (entrance to yosemite)

Tahoe can be a very frustrating place for ice, but it's around; depending on the weather.
There is also a guide that might help called " Eastern Sierra Ice" by SP Parker; if you trust Kiwis.
Also the local guidebooks have a few pages about ice.
There where also rumors a few years back ( can anyone confirm?) that folks where farming up Carson Pass( Hwy 88).I've never made it into Cold Stream Canyon, but apparently there's good stuff there.
March is getting a little late, but I've Climbed/Top Roped( read " Minimal")Lee Vining ice as a late as May.
A call to ASI may also help.

I would consider giving Cold Stream Canyon a try. Not sure what conditions would be like in March, sorta grim maybe, it is east facing. Id bring a light toprope ice set up and make it into a ski trip. If the ice isnt in, hopefully you got some good ski turns. Skin up to the top of sugar bowl or take the lift, and drop down into cold stream canyon.
My honest opinion is that you should spend March in the Canadian Rockies climbing ice and skiing with me! Im up here for the winter because I spent last year in CA and missed ice climbing and fluffy snow.

I'd love to be up in Rockies mate and I may have a chance. I should have most of my outdoor gear except a tent but can happily live in a snowcave for a week.
Years ago I used to teach skiing at Aspen and Vail so I do love the skiing. I need to make apermanent move to the US I think, just got to find work. I hear bankers are not so employable anymore
How far is the canyon from Tahoe?

Not sure if it will still be in during March, but there is an area past Eagle Lake Cliff in Eagle Creek Canyon where there is north-facing ice. Most likely not as good as Lee Vining area.
Despite the maritime storms that bring lots of water-heavy snow here (as compared to the Rockies area), we just do not have the running water they do in Colorado.

Cold Stream Canyon is about 1/2 an hour from Squaw (by car) near Donner Pass.
There is also some ice near Emerald Bay on the west side of Lake Tahoe. If I remember correctly it's north facing. Might be in during that time but I'm not sure.
