I've got a friend who uses a boom and yeah, he gets great shots but if you go climbing with him you've got to wait a good 1/2 hour to an hour until he's all set to go.

One big setback is that you're not very mobile once you're set up unless you have a really fancy rig: moving up and down or laterally while someone is in the middle of a climb means you may miss "the shot" unless you're quick...

well, I don't believe all boom users ruin the environment. Why not smokers, bolters, and yuppies with new gear? I always find a million "warning labels" torn off gear laying around the rocks surrounded by fag butts.
As for booms, I have three which I made about five or so years ago. They really are great, depending of course how you use one or your design. I highly recommend it if you have a decent background with ropes and protection(and a nice camera also helps)

I've seen pictures of people using booms for a camcorder and it looks pretty cool. When I get comfortable enough climbing, I'm sure I'll get or make a boom. You'll be able to compose way better shots.
