I was climbing in Arizona this past week in full sun. While I put SPF 60 on my face and hands, the backs of my hands still look like tanned leather. Neither attractive or healthy. With our climbing season just opening, I am looking for ways to protect my skin from the sun. Anybody have any ideas?

I definitely put sunscreen (spray) all the way over my arms, including the backs of my hands. And then use the hand salve at the end of the day, after washing off the grime and sunscreen. I've used different salves over the years (Joshua Tree, ClimbOn, Metholius, Burt's Bee's, Badger Balm, Lanolin, Sierra Climbing Salve, Angelina's Skin Doctor, Udderly Smooth, etc.), and they all work. The best ones, IMO, are the ones that have more waxy consistency, rather than the more greasy kind, though it is probably more the matter of personal taste... But all the ones listed above are different from your average beauty-store hand and body creams/lotions. The later seem to be more watery, instead of greasy/waxy, and better suited for soft dry skin, rather than for callused/leathery/cracked dry skin.

While uncool, one of the benefits of tape gloves is that they are excellent at protecting the skin on the back of your hands from the sun.

Soft hands are not very utilitarian. Embrace the "Man Hand"!

I am so trying to avoid sun on the backs of my hands. I will have "old lady" hands too early in life!

Gail, you can start a trend at the Gunks.... They're NOT tape glove; they're sun pro! On a tangent, I lost a good deal of weight from cabin-living and being on the road. I don't look into a mirror besides the van side views to make sure there's nothing embarrassing on my face in the morning, and the other day I was somewhere with a big mirror in the bathroom. Taking a moment to see what I looked like, I was happy as can be to see my double chin had all but disappeared. Then I noticed..... a shadow. Could it be? Was it possible? oh NOOOOOO - it WAS!!!! The fricken beginnings of a waddle. Life's not fair. I can blond my hair, we can sun pro the backs of our hands, but some things just can't be helped without $urgery.
