Just curious, what kind of price tag would i be looking at for the required gear to do some single pitch ice climbing?. An avg estimation would be fine.

I think maybe he might need more substantial boots and perhaps some pointy things. Edit to clarify: looks like Rudmin edited his post for ice climbing just as I was posting his original list for rock climbing (which listed $80 shoes and no ice gear), thus my post grabbed his edited list.

On top of the harness and belay device and biners that you should already have. Boots, $ 300 + depending on how fancy you want to get. Crampons 150-225 + depending on how technical you want to get. I recommend Grivel g14 or BD cyborgs (about 200 per set) but that just me Dry treated rope = $200 (ish) you can find cheaper but I feel this is close to average for a 60M dry treated rope Ice screws if you are leading 45-100 each depending on brand and fancy-ness. I like the BD express for 60 a pop but can find seconds for $45. The grivel 360 are pretty sweet too Ice tools $150 - 335 each, you will need 2, find someone that has some to barrow or rent because tools vary greatly is performance and personal feel. I love my Petzl nomics and BD Cobras. I despise the BD reactors and vipers. mostly its the handling a feel of the tool. Helmet $45-100 eye protection safty glasses at the hard wear store for $15 work wonders for keeping flying ice out of your peepers. Possibly webbing/cord for anchors but that a pretty minimal part of the bill

I assume you'll be climbing with someone that's already outfitted. Pick up some cheap second hand boots ($50 - 200 dollars depending on how you luck out), the rest of the stuff you can borrow. Crampons can be a bit of a pain, but you could probably score a cheap used pair too. When you figure out that you're really into it and an idea of that you want pick up tools, and maybe better crampons and boots. The clothes you can make so with for a while, but that gets expensive too....but certainly makes life much more comfrotable.

I just bought a pair of used (1x) ice boots, original price $450 for $100 on Craigslist. It's the start of my ice climbing gear acquisition. Now I need: crampons and axes. I will wait on screws, as I think I need to have a season or two following.

Going on two years now and it's still good enough gear for what I get done. I'd bet I could resale most of it for almost that when it comes time to upgrade. First thing will be tools.

spadout.com is a good price comparison tool if you're looking to buy anything new, it should give you some idea.

That way, you can always have a pair of dry gloves.

Good clothes are expensive, but they can b e aquired gradually.

yup. most people have warm enough clothes to get by for the day or most of US are big enough gear whores to loan out a jacket or something. I took a friend ice climbing for his 1st time and he wore thermals under JEANS and a Hoodie. also wore a protec skating helmet.

jeepnphreak wrote: eye protection safty glasses at the hard wear store for $15 work wonders for keeping flying ice out of your peepers. some sort of heavy duty eye/face protection. I ice climbed once wearing a petzl helmet that had a clear plastic face guard. I remember a few softball size, if not bigger, chunks of ice slamming into it. After that, I'm sold on it.
