I love to surf, wake-board, snow ski, climb, and do a whole lot of other activities that I need to budget bookoo bucks for for. However, out of all of these activities, climbing seems to be the most cost effective with Wake boarding and Skiing at the top of the list for being the most expensive. I own about $1000 worth of climbing gear that I pro-formed for $400 bucks 5 years ago, only replacing my shoes since. With this said, what would you say is your most expensive piece of gear? My rope is definitely my most expensive piece coming in at $230 retail. Disclaimer- I only Sport climb and own no trad gear. If you want to share what you estimate the cost of your rack is that would be entertaining as well.

I'm cheap. My rope is the most expensive piece so far at $155. But I haven't gotten into trap yet, so my whole rack is worth only about $150 total. As far as other sports go...yeah. I have a 20ga semiauto shotgun that runs $1900 retail. And a rod/reel combo for long-distance surf casting that cost me $1300 to put together. Luckily I get a break on my ski equipment through the ski patrol.

You could have very easily named this thread, "hit reply and type rope into the text box" and saved yourself from having to write your post.

Yeah the price of insulin pumps is ludicrous. I work in clinical research for diabetes medicines during the summer. We just have a drawer where we keep all our pumps in a disorganized pile because they cost nothing to the pharma companies that provide them for us.

If not, then it's my organic pad. As far as the total expense goes, Spadout estimates the retail value of my trad rack at around $2K. Of course I didn't pay that much for it. Adding in ice gear, ropes, quickdraws, belay devices, bouldering stuff, shoes, harness, etc., and climbing-specific winter clothing would probably bring the total close to $5000 in retail value. All of which is a fair chunk of change, but not even close to competitive with my road biking stuff.

My pad was my biggest expense I guess. My shoes were free and I got my rope for $108.

My boots would have been $700 if I bought them new According to Spadout, I have about $1000 of placeable protection. Counting biners slings, quickdraws, and other doodads maybe $1300 of gear.

If the question is about climbing gear, then my Fish ledge and fly is the biggest ticket item, with the piggies being a close second. If you are talking other gear, then I would assume my randonee ski gear or my mountaineering tent would be the biggies. More specific? ?? Burly Bob

My ice tools were the most expensive gear I own I think (at ~$600 for the pair). Actually, even taking them individually (at ~$300) they probably are still the most expensive piece of gear I own. I'm not sure how much my ice boots would have been new, but I got a killer deal on them. Other than that maybe the home wall?? Does that count?

My most expensive piece is the Pika Double ledge with rainfly. After that, I am guessing my Bosh 36 Volt Rotary hammer.

If i just look at "rock climbing", then yes, its probably the rope, but if i look at everything that is in some way climbing related, then its either my boots, ice axes or skis. Oh, and the car … qwert
