Hello,

Now when the season, atleast here in Finland, seems to be pretty much finnished, I were just wondering if people have any suggestions / ideas / reccomendations of ice climbing destinations in southern hemisphere? I guess the season there should be starting soon? I've heard that Chile and New Zealand might have something, but does anybody have more details of where to go and what to expect?

There was some good ice-climbing in Kenya (Mt Kenya - Diamond Couloir grade 4+) and Tanzania (Mt Kilimandjaro South Face/Messner route 5-).
However, I saw last year a report mentioning that the first half of the first pitch in Diamond Couloir is now hard dry tooling and I am not sure the Messner route is still in shape on the Kilimandajro.
As a matter of fact, it is a little bit of an expedition to go there and it also takes some acclimitization to do it but it is still good climbing and a challenging adventure.

In NZ the most accesible Ice climbing is Wye creek. It is 2 hrs ski tour or snowshoe in from the Remarkables Ski field in Queenstown. The season is July/August.
It is a maximum 3 pitch cliff Mostly single pitches/ 2 tiers
I have a blog and there are a few pics
sallyandaaron.blogspot.com

Black peak near Wanaka- 5 hrs skitour in
Twin stream, bush creek have some but I've not climbed there
The Big mountains
Some info on Mountainz.co.nz

I would recommend googling and looking at trips offered by local guiding companies to get an idea of the area's.

I don't think it is as Big or as Accesible as you are used to perhaps.

I don't mind doing few hours ski touring. :-) ... It's actually my second sport. But you're right, touring with a heavy ice climbing pack is not as fun as touring with a lighte pack. It might make sense though to go to even fairly remote destination and spend few days next to ice falls.

Thanks for the info... and the pictures in your blog were great, the mountains there look tempting.

Newer though Africa as an ice climbing destination. I mean I've hear that there's few spots, but going on a safari with all the ice gear sounds ...hmm... excotic. :-) So you've been climbing there? Do you have any pictures?
