Have you taken an avalanche course and/or a WFR course
should climbers take avalanche awareness courses? Should we encourage people on this site to take the courses?

If you are travelling in avy terrain then of course you should take a course.

Yes. Take them both. I need to take them again. Well worth it.

However, like Kevin said, don't bother with the AV course if you aren't traveling in that type of terrain.

WFR is always a good idea.

I took a level 1 avy course with Colorado Mountain School a few weeks ago. Probably the best $200 I have ever spent. I've been traveling safely in the Colorado backcountry in winter for a long time, but it still gave me lots to think about. I'll be taking my Level 2 next year.

As far as Avy courses I would recommend the American Avalanche Institute. Rod Newcomb for the science and Ron Matous(head exum guide) for the practical. They are based in jackson hole

Do your own studying and take the level II and level III

I'm in WFR now and I have always been a firm believer in medical competance especially in the back country. Both are a great idea to have...and then some.

Hey, I just finished my WFR in North Carolina. It's definitely a class worth taking. If someone hits bottom on a screamer, you need to know evacuation procedures. look towards an 80 hour course.

I work at Gerald Lawhorn Adventure Base, and it's the minimum required. So If your looking to guide, consider this and a WFA or WAFA certification.

I'm a WFR. at least for the next six months. damn, I need to re-certify. Avalanche safety? I don't hit the snow that much, actually.

Avalanche safety and knowledge is often overlooked. We have already lost one young man to an avalanche this year in the Tetons. Two year's ago six people died here in avalanches.

If you are able to, I highly recommend the courses offered by the American Avalanche Institute. They are taught by some of the most knowledgable people in the field.

I'm an EMT-B, that's the course to take. It's a s-it ton of work, but well worth it. WMI and WMA offer transition courses for the Wilderness EMT certification, well worth it.
