i was recently zip lining and they welded a peace of mettle rod across the bottom of the beaner so the sling couldn't cum off. does this affect the beaner in any way. thanksWink.

Yes, welding something to a biner will ruin its heat treatment and weaken the biner, now how much it weakens it is not a question I can answer.

and I have to laugh at the bolded part;)

Gram,

Was the metal steel or aluminum? What exactly was the carabiner used for? The effects of welding aluminum starts at about an 80% drop in strength. Steel not so much given it was done properly. There is way to many variables in welding to make any judgments based on what you saw. In my experience most people who own a welder do not have the knowledge to properly use it, this is why I would give strong caution in this case.

Sorry, was the welded carabiner part of your attachment system or just there to provide a handle?

Also, aluminum is very hard to weld, so, if steel was used, that gives a considerably larger margin of error for bodyweight only applications.

At least they used a rod with vigor and stamina

You've actually got a couple interesting misspellings there, gram. "Beaner" is a derogatory term for Mexican people. It's "biner."

The question is weather it was done by post production by someone with a welder or came like that from the manufacturer. Some are made by manufacturers and, depending on the company and testing procedures, are done so without affecting thier integrity.

The one in the picture is not exactly welded but I have seen ones with a little rod that looks like it was welded in.

I've seen steal biners with welded bars and think they are probably okay provided they were done by someone who knew what they were doing (ie don't buy cheap imported welded steal biners from unknown manufactures).

The problem with welding high strength aluminum is that it is often heat treated and welding removes this effect leave. For aluminum bikes they often heat treat the whole frame after welding...i suppose something similar could be done with aluminum carabiners but it is probably easier to get the same effect in other ways.

Well, this is fun. Something I actually know. Firstly, I am pretty sure you cannot weld aluminum to steel. As mentioned, both possibly OK before heat treating and such, but unlikely that they did that. Chances are they would just make it correctly first time. Secondly aluminum, generally takes massive heat (TIG) and you'd need to be a real pro to control that and avoid warpage of the biner.
