Because you can't solve problems and its easier for you just to blast out shit in an attempt to stir the pot? :D, striked it pretty good eh? Anyways, if you also have been paying attention its that I generally don't like wearing helmets or hats or anything on my head and I guess it will be more if the situation calls for it rather than the 100% or 0% of time guideline you guys thrive on. I just noted the only reason I don't have a helmet right at this moment is because I can't afford it. Wow, did you see that. When you actually understand stuff you can write something that helps rather than blast crap from out of the blue. :D, hoped this help! This is a topic that I hate to chime in on, but someone needs to counterbalance the helmet Nazis. The link up-thread to Joe Morgan's comment is correct: most climbers don't wear helmets most of the time. That's not necessarily a good thing, but it's the truth. Helmet wearing is a personal decision, as is every decision about risk. There is no question that wearing a helmet will reduce the likelihood of your being killed or severely injured climbing. But the decision whether to wear one is entirely yours—and your partners, since, as has been mentioned, if you are belaying and you get knocked out by rockfall, your partner's safety will be jeopardized. I don't normally wear a helmet because I mostly single-pitch sport climb, and I think I'm competent enough that my risk of flipping over and hitting my head in a lead fall is low. That said, I'm planning to go trad climbing tomorrow at a crag where loose rock is a known factor. Were it not for the fact that I've lost my helmet, I'd wear one. As is, I've decided to belay with a grigri—which I've always argued against doing while trad climbing—to mitigate the risk of losing control of the belay should I get taken out by a falling rock. If you don't hear from me after tomorrow, then, for god sake's, WEAR A HELMET! Jay

Is that the new thing? wierd, its just they are very uncomfortable to me and obstruct my view which makes them all annoying. Pesonal reasons. 2. You try to hard to find the fault in a statement that you end up making an unreasonable connection. That insult only shows your character aswell. 3. Your correct, what difference does it make; Except, that was not what that statement meant at all. It was based on the suggestions of whether to wear a hat. Again, trying too hard to find a way to attack me. 4. Its reasonable you said that, seeing how wrong everything else was you couldn't make a reasonable conclusion to that statement. 5. Would have been easier if you just said what you meant, "umadbro?" Also, trying not to be a douche, just making my own standpoint from everything you said and the way this post is going :D

So to recap...you say you dont have the money to purchase a helmet even if you wanted to, yet, you create a thread seeking advice on obtaining new gear. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm assuming you're not sponsored, and where I come from obtaining gear unfortunately requires spending....money. Inconsistency #3472893-B-0

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm assuming you're not sponsored, and where I come from obtaining gear unfortunately requires spending....money. Inconsistency #3472893-B-0 This is getting ridiculous. The guy primarily wants to sport climb, but has limited funds to invest in equipment. He has six draws and needs six to eight more, approximately the cost of a helmet. If he buys a helmet, he still won't be able to lead a sport route, so he'll be able to safely sit on his couch wearing his helmet. If he buys the draws instead, he will be able to sport climb, assuming the risk of climbing without a helmet, a feat which the vast majority of sport climbers have done for decades, and continue to do, injury free. Let the guy make his own choice, for chrissake. Jay

Thanks Jay, pretty much hit straight on. As for right now, in the first couple of posts I already figured out what to get next and so on but this entire post turned to an argument between wearing helmets which of course pulled in a troll. Climb On! :D

You incessantly feel the need to puff your chest, even so much that you included your climbing grade in your ever-so-important rc.com nickname. The glory days were great, im sure, but no one cares about them. Buy a corvette, get your ear pierced, frost your tips and move on :)

Not all helmets are equal. If you choose the right one, you do not have to be uncomfortable or have your view obstructed. So mine suggestion is, if comfort is the issue. If you are going to shop for climbing gear anyways, try all helmets you run in to. And i do mean ALL of them. Then rethink the uncomfortable and view obstructed issues and decide again.

jt512 wrote: First of all, the "512" in my username has nothing to do with my climbing grade. I can assure you that I did not climb 5.12 when I made up that name—at best it was wishful thinking (that happened to come true). Secondly, you're the one who played the self-righteous trad climber card, and you played it with someone trad climbs several number grades harder than you, even though he doesn't even like trad climbing. Third, I said nothing about my climbing grade until you accused me of being an internet poser. The only poser, here, son, is you: big-shot trad climber. 5.6. Yeah, right. I know this might be hard for you to take in, but, i'm still not impressed. However, f you keep your attitude up, i'm going to be forced to retro bolt all of new jacks sickest dopest pulldowns with 10ft spaced bolts and keep you on the couch more than you blatantly already are.
