I picked up a BD ATC-GUIDE today, and didn't notice this until I got home so I couldn't compare it to other units. On the guide "eye" outside edge, there is a slight crease, kind of like a seam in the metal. I tried to take a picture, but it's hard to get good lighting on rough aluminum. If you can see it, or have one of these and know if it's "normal," please let me know. Thanks, Rick

Mine is about 5 years old and doesn't show the same "groove," but I personally would not hesitate to use yours as pictured. My first thought is that it is just a minor artifact from the casting process. If, however, you have any reservations then a call or e-mail to Black Diamond would certainly be in order.

I have one of the new styled ATC guides (the side cutouts) and I have the same mark.

Yeah, definitively looks like the byproduct of manufacturing and not a seam.

I figured I was being a little over-conservative, but my two kids will be hanging from it. If it was just me I wouldn't have given it a second thought. You're kids weigh more than you do?

No, I'm just saying I'm reckless with my life, but not theirs. (and I was more or less joking anyway)

fwiw, the ATC-Guide is hot forged, so a seam is unlikely.

This would be a perfect time to email that photo to BD and ask them about it. They actually have climbers and designers and engineers on staff there who actually know what they're talking about. Climb safe, Mal

How about a couple more pages of all these entertaining explanations before we get the actual reason.

I wanted to know if other ATC-GUIDE units had this, or if it was unique to mine. Since it's not unique to mine (which I've confirmed now from someone above and the store), I figure it is no problem. If anyone else is actually curious, fell free to send BD my picture. Of course, I could e-mail them and ask if this is just something I should expect now that all their stuff is made in China. Alas, that would just open me up to the reply, "you bought it, dumbass."
