Few years ago I stayed at a hostel in Santiago... I met up with a Peruvian guy teaching English to travelers. He knew of a GREAT place to go that was several city buses away (actually the trip TO the crag was one of my trip's hi-lights). the climbing was HARD, but was well protected sport climbing. there's a climbing store in town, just ask around - many know of it, surely you'll find someone there, or will be given the name/number of someone. Just a suggestion though... unless your Spanish is excellent, you DEF want to agree upon your climbing terms (climbing/climb on/falling/rope/etc) and test them with your partner before doing any serious climbing. I thought that I had agreed with my Peruvian friend on a set of terms, but that, of course went out the window when things got sketchy. lol.

By The way... It took me a while to remember the name of the place that I climbed in Chile. It is called Las Palestras. There's was a women who WAS attempting to open a climber's hostel, literally, on the hike to the crag. She was super nice and invited my Peruvian friend and I in for some lunch. I don't know if she ever officially opened or not, BUT if she did, i can envision it being wildly popular with climbers... it's like 10 minutes down from the wall from what i remember. Good luck with the trip.. and again - post pics and a travel report! I found my photos of the place from 2006. Enjoy: The crag: http://min.us/ljthNK In the photo above, I BELIEVE the red house right in the middle of the photo (with the deck... not the smaller red/yellow house below it) is the hostel i mentioned.
