So I have been reading alot and watching alot of documentaries on state parks and it has driven me to finally take up rock climbing. I have invested in the book Rock Climbing: Mastering the Basic Skills and would like to know if there are any good sites out there to get me started with the basic info and equipment i need to get started in the sport.

Thanks

Joe

The best place I've found to get things cheap is to watch amazon. You can get prAna, Evolv and all kinds of other great climbing brands for cheap. Also watch the list at the bottom of the rock climbing.com homepage it has some deals from other web sites that are very good deals.

the local gym is a great place to start, meet people and get a feel for it before you spend your paycheck on gear week after week and wind up liveing in your car from crag to crag

Definitely start to talk with other climbers at the gym. There's only so much you can read about in a book to gain the knowledge you need in climbing. Also- a guide/course is a great way to start. Good luck! Welcome to the clan...

PS- Moosejaw.com is AWESOME

Do a lot of people climb alone once they got all the basics and use of the gear down pat?

Yes, particularly if everyone hates them and they have no friends to climb with.

Start at a local climbing gym by taking a few classes to develop your skills. Books are great but climbing is all about the experience and you can't get that from a book.

Most gyms have a board that you can post your information on looking for a climbing partners. I have also found that people in the gym setting tend to be more helpful and willing to partner up than on real rock. I've had more than one occasion in the gym where people just came up and asked if they could climb with me.

There aren't a lot of places to get inexpensive equipment. But the basics (shoes, belay device, chalk bag and a harness) are not actually that expensive. You don't need a full rack to start out and do a lot of cool stuff.

Climb On!

Really?? Thats why I can never find a climbing partner.
To the op:
Find a partner / partners to climb with. Its safer and more fun.
