Hi All,

Girlfriend and I started climbing indoor 1 year ago and decided to take the outside top-rope transition class not too long ago. We should do our indoor lead class within a month.

Is there any spot at Adirondack park for top-rop climbing? Otherwise, any suggestion for outdoor top-rope routes?

Thank you,
Nayas~

It's a big park. Beer walls has some good toproping off of trees so you don't need a rack to work with.

I'd suggest you look into the, 4th Annual Southern Adirondack Rock Climbers Festival.

There is a pretty good community of climbers in NY and the festival is a good place to meet some of them. it's been a pretty inviting event in the past. Contact those folks and they may be able to suggest some opportunities close to you.

You're going to have to shell out for the Adirondack Rock guidebook in order to find the various areas and routes. It is an outstanding resource. Once you have it, look in Appendix B in the back; there's a separate index for toprope areas.

I second Mike on Adirondack Rock, one of the most impressive guides every produced. If you are going to climb in the Daks, you simply have to own it.

Get an affordable rack. (I started with 10 nuts and 5 tricams, used the long metal file on a Leatherman pocketknife as a nut tool, and 20' of toprope webbing doubled on itself a few times as primitve draws). Climb something waaaaaay below what you think is your ability (I did Weissner Slab at Ragged in Connecticut, 5.3). There. Now you're leading and no longer limited by toproping areas.

That said, I third the comments about the new guidebook and yes, the Beer Walls have lots of good topropes (and even more good leads).

Climb safe.

You guys sound like you have a dearth of experience to take you into the outdoors. there's nothing wrong with that, but that being said, you would be wise to disregard advice like this until you have some practical skills to build off. THe Adirondacks provide an excellent wildness climbing experience for folks of all abilities, however until you possess the practical knowledge of placing gear, managing rope systems, route finding, and generally watching your ass in the backcountry, it's risky business to follow the advice DL suggests.

crawl before you walk.

The book is already in the mail. I should get it by the end of the week ;)

Hi DL,

Thanks for the suggestion, but we will not be doing lead routes before we have like a year of indoor experience and the outdoor class. We prefer to have some experience and the class to be safer ;)
