Personally, I boulder twice a week after work at my local climbing gym. (it has an insanely good bouldering cave and a hugely psyched group of people there)

And then I am out one or two of the days on the weekend.

Once per week is better than no times per week, but 2-3 times per week will get you much better gains. And it is just damn fun of course.

If you can only climb once a week, be sure to do pullups, sit ups and calf raises. These are important muscle groups for climbing. Also, make sure you exercise the opposing muscle groups or you will get hurt. Run alot, too, so you will be ready for long approaches.

Laura,

I'm in the same situation. Time doesn't allow for me to go out there more than once a week. (mainly do to the schedules of my friends - and going alone kind of sucks).

I go to the "regular" gym 3 times a week and work on anything that I can think of that would help climbing. Example...I used to get "elvis leg" (that leg shaking sensation when trying to hold on about 30 feet up) in the beginning. Then I focused on my calf a lot more during my workouts. Now Elvis Leg happens MUCH MUCH later...

Fingers strenght seems to be the only thing you can't work on in a regular gym.

all the best

To work your fingers and hands with weight lifting, do heavy finger rolls with a dumbbell and do wrist curls both forward and back.

Try a hangboard too.

Thanks,

I do the curls quite a bit, but somewhere I had read that it doesn't make much difference until you get to the kind of weight that climbing puts on your fingers...either way, I guess it can't hurt.

Landlord would KILL me if I screwed a Hangboard into this place

If climbing isn't your LIFE by now, you're climbing too little.

what kind of a question is that???

How often do I HAVE to climb. You don't have to at all. But like anything in life it requires a commitment to improve.

i would say it depends on your goal and the time limit you want to reach it in. I try and climb as many times a week as possible, and the do a few pull-ups on my room door as well (Simulates an edge)

Once a week will allow progress though, but climb hard when you climb though

To actually start improving, I find that I need to climb at least three times a week, with at least one session on actual rock (dunno why, it really does seem to make a difference for some reason). Anything less than that is simply maintenence.

Also, unless you are a beginner, I don't think weight sessions at the gym are much use- I work out five times a week on fairly heavy weights and find it quite irrelevant to climbing.

Climb all the time, and when u can't still climb. I climb over the top of my cubicle like 4 times an hour.

Yay!

How long to you climb on the one day? How hard do you push your limits? Is it trad, sport, bouldering? All of this affects your progress.

You are free to climb as much and as little as you like. As with anything, the more you do it, the faster you will get better.

I climb once a week and I'm fine with it.
