Is it legal to climb on a rock wall right next to a road? I would just be bouldering. I was delivering a pizza in the middle of a city and noticed there was a long 15 to 20 foot rock wall formed but a road cutting into a hill. There is a sidewalk and a wide shoulder. I attached a google street view sceenshot below. My only concern is a cop driving by and giving me a citation for some technicality.
Do any of you know if climbing this wall would be legal?

Depends on the road, depends on the city.

It would probably be highly frowned upon, most police would do is kick you off and say that you are trespassing, kinda like skateboarding.

Be careful climbing on roadside rock, often times they blast the rock to clear it and it's unstable for climbing. It's really not worth the effort considering the legal grey area it falls under and the unnecessary danger of choss.

by the look of the photo, it has a sidewalk between the rock & the road. which looks safe to me. but I'd ask the property owner & confirm that there ok with you climbing on it.

If it weren't for roadside climbing, we wouldn't have nearly as much to climb right outside of town, and this is the side of a freeway.

Many routes are even closer to the side of the road.

I'd say for your roadside traverse, forgo chalk and if somebody asks you what you're doing, just be respectful.

I was wondering the same thing. At my cottage up near bancroft there are rock faces like that which are at least 60' high every 1km or so on every highway in the surrounding area. Other then that the closest climbable rockface is Eagles Nest which is 45 minutes away. Each of the faces are all great rock with beautiful features just waiting to be climbed. Never done so, for the fear of getting busted for some odd reason.

I see a couple of different fences up top, but can't tell much else. If it's residential, I'd probably clear it with the property owner. Otherwise, I'd just climb on it until someone kicked me off. I'd avoid chalk, and I'd be extremely polite if questioned. I'd only go by myself or maybe with one friend. The reaction to one nut is probably going to be more favorable than the reaction to a bunch of guys in beanies yelling, "Allez!"

As others have said, that's likely to be chossy as hell. Also, watch your ankles with that landing.

Its actually a fairly busy street, not exactly residential. I know there are a fair amount of cops that drive down the road. I inspected the bottom half of the wall and its actually very stable with lots of holds everywhere. It's almost like it was designed for climbing. When I pulled over and inspected the wall there was a guy across the street who didn't look to pleased with what I was doing. The no chalk is a good idea, no need to leave any marks on the wall and give people a reason to say no. I guess all I can do is climb and see what happens.

As said, it depends on the area, rock quality, traffic and other factors.

Another citation that may be added to the mix is reckless endangerment.
