Hey guys!

Can't wait for my trip to Kauai and Maui 3/22-3/29 but now looking at the climbing possibilities, it seems that I'm going to the wrong island, eh? ahhaha

If someone can point me in the right direction of some cool bouldering/dws/sport on these two islands, I would love to hear about it! Definitely looking to get out with some local climbers when I'm there!!

Justin

Oahu is the only island with established climbing.

I was there last week and maybe I'm wrong but there could be some monster big wall routes developed on the Na Pali shore in Kauai - you'd probably have to bolt in the expansion dikes but I think it could be done.

Not exactly the afternoon climbing adventure while on vacation with the family, but still...

Bouldering abounds in Maui - we played on the Black Sand beach on the road to Hana for a while. Bring a pad and you can find plenty of problems in the V0-V5 range.

Na Pali is stunning, but the rock has the consistency of a stack of potato chips. Kalalau trail has plenty of exposure, though, gorgeous hike.

Well there are bands of much harder rock along sections of the Na Pali (vertical volcanic dykes), some of which looked wide enough to form a route. I'm pretty sure it could be done.

That being said, 99% of the walls out there would probably not support body weight, much less take any gear.

Sounds like Cannon Cliff here in NH. Why not wait until winter when it freezes solid...Wink

The only DWS I am aware of is at South Point on the Big Island. However I haven’t been to Maui so I couldn’t say for sure if there is any off the wall type DWS. I do know there is potential for climbing in Maui though, just no one to bolt it.

justin,
hey there, I am heading to Kauai in september and was wondering what you found out about the climbing there? is it worth bringing the gear? thanks for any info you can share.

Bring shoes, plenty of bouldering. Unless you have a lot of time and like bushwhacking, crumbly rock, and first ascents, leave the gear at home.

Do you have any beta for bouldering? I'll be there next week and I'd like to boulder / traverse whatever just to keep my muscles in shape. Is there a climbing gym or an artificial wall? I'm just looking to train a little bit during the weekend, that's it.

Glass beach on SW shore, or Secret beach on NE shore for starters. Look them up in the blue Kauai guide. Shipwreck beach DWS, pretty much you can't go more than a couple miles along any beach without stumbling across bouldering.
