Bay Area Climbers Need Your Help to Save Summit Rock!

The County of Santa Clara, California has closed Summit Rock, a popular crag in the Bay Area to protect peregrine falcons nesting. Instead of implementing a seasonal climbing closure to protect the nesting site, which is the standard management practice at all levels of government nationwide, the County is enforcing a year round closure. Summit Rock is the only year-round raptor-related climbing closure in the nation!

The Access Fund is attacking this issue on two levels, and we need your help with both:

1. Use our easy-to-use advocacy tool to write County officials and protest this closure. With juse one click you can send a pre-written letter that the Access Fund has drafted, or with a little more effort you can edit the letter or write your own. http://www.accessfund.org/action

2. Make a donation to help us bring a renowned peregrine expert to Summit Rock to look at the site, discuss best practices with climbers and the County, and give a written opinion. http://www.accessfund.org/savesummitrock

Thanks for your support!

If you're using Firefox with the AdBlocker Plus add-on, the action alert won't show up. We're working on a fix, but in the meantime, try thre link with Internet Explorer.

You people really suck if you do not sign this petition. This is an overstep of power to shut down climbing while simultaneously letting local gang-bangers have full access to our rocks without our deterrence.

Now, there are no climbers there, just law-disregarding 'taggers' and 'bottle chuckers'.

It has been proven that the closure is not necessary year-round, by specialists in raptor study.

First they shut down my crag, yours may be next. Let's work together, huh?

Sign this petition to keep Summit Rock open to climbing. Please!

It's not hard. Help me and local bros out. I'd help you.

Thank you. If you need more info on this and bird conditions, which are fine, e-mail at spratico@gmail.com.

This is sanctioned by the Access Fund, but I'm not affiliated with them. They are just trying to help us.

Thanks, Edge. This is an important example (president) being laid down to shut off climbing year-round.

Tell yer friends. This will not stand...man!

Thanks, bra!

Shock, yeah, kinda lame. I actually knew I screwed that word. I just had to post up.

I just couldn't nail "precedant", or is it, "precedent".?

The second. And I sent the letter.

The result of your post was actually better than you might expect. I read the comment above about the Access fund site not working with Firefox and after multiple times trying to use it I finally figured out how.

Thanks.Smile

You can see in this photo of the back of Summit Rock taken in Feb. 2012 that the whole area is turning into a refuge for gang bangers and taggers:

The County is using the year-round closure of Summit Rock as a pretext not only for closing the area, but for not patrolling either.
