My girlfirend and I are new to climbing and we absolutely love it. I want to educate myself on basic techniques that will help us at the gym only.

Telling someone with a girlfriend to "KISS" is not helpful about climbing. You know, but he may not know, what the letters stand for: Keep It Simple. The added "S" is for people like you to say something ugly to someone. That advice is about anchors, so far as I've read, not about movement during a climb, which is what the OP seems to me to be asking. .

When I first started looking for books to help improve my climbing, I was recommended to quite a few books. As I like to read, I bought most of them and own quite a few climbing and bouldering books now. While everyone is different, the best book so far has been: 1. The Self Coached Climber. If you only get one book, get this one. There is absolutely no substitute for just climbing more and this book will plainly tell you that. But it will give you quite a few things to pay attention to as well as exercises to do while at the gym that will help improve your technique. 2. How to Rock Climb This is a very good book, but if you are just gym climbing it will not do you very much good as it is mostly focused on trad climbing. Even if you move to outdoor sport climbing it won't do you very much good...90% is about trad and crack climbing skills (yes, sport routes can also be crack climbs, but this is not the norm for sport routes). 3. Better Bouldering Not exactly geared toward gym climbing, but it will give you valid technique advice on bouldering..which can be applied to crux movement in a climbing gym. If you buy 2 books, this would be the 2nd to buy (for gym climbing)--in my opinion. If you start advancing in climbing then other books like "How to Climb 5.12" and "9 out of 10 Climbers Make the Same Mistake" come into play. Again, just climbing more frequently is the absolute BEST thing you can do. But if you want a little something to give you a boost on your off time, these books will help you.
