The past 2 years ive been climbing or rappelling. 1st i was looking for an achor and I walked right by a dead stump with a HUGE hornet nest. I dropped my rope and and ran. I had to go back for my rope which was on the nest and throw it off the edge and run. the second time i was half way down the cliff and a nest of wasps will come out of the rock and attack me.

I once climbed past a wasps nest in a crack. I explained to them that i had no intent to disturb them or their nest, and that my last pro was rather far below me, so they let me (and my partner a few minutes later) pass. That was very nice of them. But it was in summer. I was attacked by a wasp in my garden this year, but that was also summer, just as when a bee stung me a few weeks later. I also stepped on a beehive once when i was a little kid, but also in summer. But in fall? qwert

I got stung by a bee last fall. Maybe it wasn't a bee, but it stung me. Bees look sort of like wasps, but they are different. When rappelling, you have to keep a hand on the rope, so you can't swat the bees when they come at you. You can't swat the bees, either. I once saw a tree fall during wind storm. It was during fall season, and I was climbing. There were no wasps in the trunk, and no hornets, either. But it was a big tree.

I prefer climbing in summer since there's always a good chance you'll find a watermellon sitting at the top of the climb. (true story)

I dramatically reduced my climbing this summer in favor of the cool rivers and whitewater boating here in western NC. Now that I know watermelons are up top I'm inclined to sell my boat and top out more often instead of rapping from the chains!
