I am headed to Phoenix a week and I would like to know: 1) Which of the climbing gyms is the better of the two? 2) If there is any bouldering or sport climbing within a half hour or so of the area. Also, I am looking for someone to climb or boulder with next weekend. I will be arriving Thursday night.

My wife and I went to Phoenix this last year and part of our trip was spent climbing. As it turns out, much of the climbing right around Phoenix is not actually on rock, and the result has been several deaths over the last few years (according the guy at the climbing gym we visited). We ended up going to the Jacks which was a little more of a drive, but well worth visiting. Adelphos

Phoenix area's are coming in to the season right now. You best bet for sport and bouldering is Queen Creek which is about 45 min outside city limits near the town of Superior. Locals at either the PRG or Climbmax can fill you in on any closer are's but most are just a fraction of what Queen Creek has to offer. I'd help ya out but I'm heading to Hueco for a while...

Climbmax seems more bouldering oriented but PRG has plenty of same. There are a couple more gyms but those are the biggest. I'm not sure who misinformed the previous visitor but the rock around phoenix is fine and it is actual rock. He may have referred to the person killed by bees midway up the Hart Route in Camelback @ several years ago. As Jbone said, the easiest place to get your fill of sport and bouldering is at Queen Creek where nobody has died yet. The rock is volcanic and can be hard on soft gym fingers. There are other places within a couple hours if you are interested, pm me.

It was one of the guys at Climbmax. We had stopped there looking for some sport climbing. I can't recall which location he was referring to though. It was right in Phoenix though. I have to say, The Jacks rocked.

Jacks is cool and a lot of people are afraid of soft rock, especially Camelback. It has lots of loose stone and it is hazardous after a rain. Still, nobody has been killed climbing there except for the poor soul who fell escaping bees. About 25 years ago an ASU student, taken some outing course, soloed and fell from Suicide direct. Dying in the process. I know of no other fatality on or near Phoenix due to climbing with a rope in your gym employee's lifetime. Adelphos: next time you come to Phoenix, I'll take you out to Camelback. Guarantee nobody dies...

Very cool - I do believe that Camelback was the area that they were talking about. My wife and I seem to make it down to Phoenix every year so I might well take you up on that!
