There are a number of 'boulderers' at my local gym who don't where shirts and traverse around the gym breathing extremely loud. The volume roughly correlates to the number and hotness of the females present.

The loud breathing I equate to standard douchbaggery.... What is the origin of this beanie radness? Is there logic behind it or is it just a trend?

This thread is hilarious. I love the different things that can go through people's minds when they observe the same phenomena. Whenever I see a boulderer or someone in a rad beanie, I think, "Ooh, I should find yarn like that and crochet one of those!" I rarely ever wear hats, though, I just like to make them, give them at gifts, and observe other people wearing them.

The breathing thing makes me wonder if you're especially sensitive to loud breathing sounds. I'm sensitive to loud chewing or spitting sounds, but not so much to the breathing, I think. Then again, I don't know how loud is loud--what's the decibel level here?

All gyms have the "Brahs" you seem to be referring to but not everyone who makes noise climbing is one of them. Maybe these guys crushing and wearing beanies have nothing to to with each other. Do you ever make noise climbing? One day you'll learn how strenuous hard routes are and sometimes you just gotta get loud to get sh*t done.

I judge people by what they wear all the time. Particularly my wife and her footwear.

It sounds like you're feeling a little defensive there.

Sorry dude, I'm bored.

ahh, I see, you judge them by the numbers that represent their climbing skill.

I judge people by that in combination with their attitude. The crappy but humble climbers are okay.

The crappy, loud, arrogant, disrespectful, douchebag climbers are... like... douchebags.

Not that I'm referring to anyone in particular.

Except those people of course.

I wear a beanie mostly because I'm bald.

Because it keeps you warm when your head is cold.

donwanadi wrote:

We are men, we love sex. And surprisingly, bouldering without a shirt on and traversing around females where they can easily see you (and hear you, in this case) increases the chances of attraction from said females. They will look, and if you're lucky they'll like what they see. In nature, males always attempt to attract females to mate with. Honestly, this should not require much thought to understand.

donwanadi wrote:

People tend to breathe louder and harder when they are starting to get pumped or tired. The logic behind the beanie is obvious... it keeps you warm. As a matter of fact I'm wearing a beanie right now.

It sure sounds like you're either jealous of, or annoyed by the beanie-wearing shirtless traversing boulderers.

Either way, none of us can help you there, this is a personal problem.

My only suggestion is to get laid more, maybe you'll stop caring.

EDIT: Normally I'm not this sarcastic or condescending. But how can you not expect to get flamed by everyone when you ask for such silly explanations.

Ladies - Please chime in if you have had sex with one of the traversing beanie wearing loud breathing folks. Were you attracted by the shirtlessness? The beanie? The loud breathing? (I know how you girls love it when dudes get their scream on in the gym.) Did they keep the beanie on for sex?

Loud enough to be heard 30-40ft away in a separate somewhat secluded bouldering cave.

Not at all. You claim it's an effective technique for attracting women. What's wrong with asking?

I never made such claim as to say that it was truely effective.

To answer your question, "What's wrong with asking?"

You're searching for an answer to support how you feel about these boulderers. I already gave a clear, factual explanation for you.

Like I said before, just ignore them. Ignore me. Take a deep breath. Pretend this thread never happened. Go climb.

Clearly, this thread has progressed to a solution for the OP: make more noise and wear more beanies than the other guys!

Gotta love the gym. Young college dudes taking their shirts off and screaming their way through a soft v3...then the quiet older gentleman happens by, and cruises up every multitape problem in the gym while the coeds watch and pretend not to be floored
