Hi guys, I'm leaving early may this year on a 2 month road trip with my brother! We'll drive from: -Montreal -Red River Gorge (kentucky) -Boulder, Colorado -Moab, Utah -Los Angeles (California) -Yosemite Valley (california) -Tofino (BC) -Vancouver (BC) -Montreal Obviously, these are only the (very) rough lines of our road trip. Do you have any suggestion on places to go rock climbing? We climb easy trad (up to 5.8), moderate sport (up to 5.11+), and moderate boulder (up to V5). What are the places we MUST stop during our trip? We are the place we must NOT stop during our trip? Thank you very much for your help! Have a good one, and a safe climb!

On your way to the red, maybe swing through Rumney for sport and then the Gunks for trad. Lots of climbing in your grades at both places. Why LA?

I did kind of a cross country trip a few years back and we hit Needles/Mt Rushmore, and Devil's Tower. I thought those were good and broke up the driving through that part of the country nicely. Also consider some of Wyoming's other sport crags (Wild Iris, Ten Sleep, Sinks). While in CO, I'd think about Lumpy Ridge in RMNP, especially if it is warm.

-Red River Gorge (kentucky) - really hot at this time of year, but some good trad near your level and easy sport as well -Boulder, Colorado - this one is easy any time of year, but if you waited until July and maybe June this year, you'll have everything RMNP... lots of good easy and moderate trad and beautiful -Moab, Utah - hot as balls in summer and not much under 5.10 worth doing. -Los Angeles (California) - LA is a third world country and best avoided, especially in summer. Go to the Needles If I were you I'd just drive straight to California. Detour off I80 N for Wyoming or S for Colorado. Choose based on snow conditions at that time of year (could be a lot in May and June, but maybe not if the winter has been dry). City of Rocks should be on your list for sure, it's a few hours north of I80/SLC. Ultimately, get to Cali, go to the Valley, the Needles, get out into the High Sierras, go up to Lover's Leap and Donner Summit, then head up to Squamish. Alpine stuff is usually not in until sometime between June and August, so you're a little early, but it will depend on the snow year.

some of the destinations in this thread have reservation programs for some campsites, something to consider, especially in the summer when the parks are crowded....

I wont go to Rumney/Gunk only because that they're quite close to Montreal (5h / 8h drive from here) and I can go there pretty much anytime I want (which isn't quite the case for Yosemite Valley...). So I'll try to focus on the places that are much more far away from my place! :) Why LA ? Because I'll go surfing near LA, and if someone has a really nice climbing spot nearby, feel free to tell it! :) Thanks for all your inputs! Keep 'em coming! :) Have a safe climb,

I would take a northern route through Wisconsin (Devil's Lake) then stop at the Needles of South Dakota, Devil's Tower and the Tetons in Wyoming.

Sometimes, less is more. Instead of picking ten climbing areas, choose 3 to 5 and stay at each location longer. Places like Yosemite, Devils Tower, even Red River Gorge require more than two or three days to appreciate for sure. Personally, I would minimize the areas I climb. This would mean less time in the car and more time climbing. Eman

If you do decide to visit LA, check out Joshua Tree as well as Malibu for climbing. I agree with the others though in that you might want to only spend a little time here, unless vacationing is the focus (in which case I would do the classic San Francisco to LA drive down Highway 1). Otherwise, head up to the Sierra's and have fun. Keep truckin!
